The Muncie Times retains the right to edit all materials submitted for publication. But because of the unique nature of poetry, we have suspended this rule for “Poet’s Corner”. African American poets often use the vernacular of the contemporary black experience. Their work is sometimes saturated with the language, rhythm and semantics of the streets. This language is their instrument, without which they cannot play their songs. At The Muncie Times, we will not try to stifle creativity. However, blatantly offensive, racist or sexist material will not be printed, of course, and we do reserve the right to choose which works to publish.

My Father
How Will I Be Eulogized?
The Best Mom is My Mom
Never knew my biological father well
What would the world be
I would really say that my mom is the best
Seen him briefly as a child
If ev’rybody were like Me?
She brought me into this world
He never told me he loved me
How many causes would be fought for?
And I love her for that
Nor expressions of his feelings towards me did he
How many lives would be set free?
I love the way my mom has raised me
show
She has raised me to the best of her ability
But I do know my father Jesus
Free to live, too love, to leam, to grow
She has always told me to try my best
He took me in as His own
Free to be just who they are
And to always put God first
Gave me a name and heritage to be proud of
Free, to wear their individuality
She has also said never let people discourage me
He shows His love to me daily
Without persecution or scar
Don't live your whole life wondering what people might
He washed me in cleansing waters
say about you
Robed me in His righteousness
How will I be eulogized?
I love my mom for keeping her head up
Covers me with His blood
Will someone stumble over their words?
Through the bad tiipes and even the good times
Took me in His arms and gave me peace
Or with my life would I have served?
My mom has always made sure I’ve had the best
And on top of all that
And not the worst
He gave me a promise of eternal life
Did I lend a helping hand?
She has always been by my side even if I did something
O’ what a Father I have
Did I try to understand?
bad
Did I leave a word of hope along the way?
She was always there
Thank you Jesus for being my father
She’s always there for me when Tm hurt, discouraged
