I have what my doctor calls open-angle glaucoma. Why is it called open-angle, and can I use anti-allergy meidcations with it?

The name “open-angel glaucoma” comes from the fact that the drainage of the fluid from inside the eye is open and unobstructed. The defect is in the drain itself, which does not allow the flow of the fluid, which is produced inside the eye, to continue on its way outside the eye. This is in contrast to the angle-closure glaucoma, where the iris is physically occluding the drain, and is causing the pressure to increase. If you have openangle glaucoma, the use of anti-allergy medications is not contraindicated. The reason that use of anti-allergy medications is contraindicated in angle-closure glaucoma, is that it may cause dilation of the pupil, and worsening of the closure

of the angle by the iris.
