Turner, 95, Brown, 90 celebrate birthdays

Best wishes to two of our community’s lovliest women, Elsie Turner and Verna Brown, who recently celebrated their 90th and 95th birthdays, respectively. Turner will always be remembered for her involvement with youth and for her support of many Ball State students, through lodging and home-cooked meals. Brown, who still drives, has been a business and civic leader. She is preparing to write her memoirs.

Angel Bames has become nutrition coordinator for Area 6 Community and Senior Services, Inc. Bames oversees the meals, five days a week at several sites in seven Indiana counties. Recently, Bames conducted a senior citizen open house extravaganza. “We felt that an open house would be appropriate at this new site,” said Bames. Meals at Union Missionary Baptist Church are provided 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and from noon to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays. Meals are free or for a donation to anyone 60 or over. To anyone under 60, the cost is $3.50. “We are also expanding services and activities for our seniors,” Bames said. “The program will include screenings, manicures, watching movies, arts and crafts, and shopping trips.” Transportation can be arranged by calling 284-7274. For more information, call Bames at 317-759-1121.
