Experts offer summer skin care tips DALLAS—For many African Americans, summer is the season to gather with loved ones for food, fun and a multitude of outdoor activities, during traditional family reunions. However, a great family reunion can turn into a nightmare when your skin is exposed to the harmful rays of summer sun. Because African Americans are just as susceptible to sunburn and skin cancer as fairer skinned individuals, the Black Women’s Advisory Committee of Mary Kay Inc., comprised of top black independent sales directors from across the country, offers the following tips for healthy summer skin: • Use sunscreen. Select by first determining how much time you can spend in the sun without burning. • Select a sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of 30 for maximum coverage. Read the product label carefully to determine the amount of time your sunscreen will allow you to safely spend in the sun. •Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before sun exposure for the greatest level of protection and always re-apply frequently. • To protect your lips, apply a lip balm. • To provide additional sun protection for your face, use a radiance cream or a radiance liquid foundation. • In addition to sunscreen, men can incorporate sun protection into their skin care routine by using an oil controller with sunscreen SPF 8.
