Federal Reserve Bank has new chairman

The United States has 12 branches of the Federal Reserve Bank, located throughout the country. These banks serve as “clearing houses” for many financial transactions: processing electronic payments, checks, interbank loans and transfers. Perhaps more importantly, they are the instrument by which the federal government controls the country’s money supply and certain key interest rates. The FED also plays a regulatory role for commercial banks; for example, they review bank mergers. Effective Jan. 1996, the Federal Reserve Bank in Atlanta, Ga., has a new chairman, businessman Hugh M. Brown. Brown is the president of a Florida-based engineering company, BAMSI, Inc. He is the first African American to hold the position of chairman. W
