Indy pastor to raise money in bike ride across U.S.
Rev. Larry M. Curtis and bike
The Rev. Larry M. Curtis, district superintendent of the Indianapolis West district of the United Methodist Church began a 3,500-mile bicycle ride across the United States on June 17. This challenging ride is expected to take the 58-year-old pastor 6 weeks to complete. His journey will begin in Seattle, Wash., and finish in Rehoboth Beach, Dela. He will be staying at United Methodist churches at various points along the route. Curtis’ ride is to raise money and awareness for the United Methodist Children’s Home in Lebanon, Ind. Spending much of his childhood in a similar home, this fund-raiser takes on a special dimension for the Hoosier pastor. To date, over $41,000 has been pledged
to the home.
The theme Curtis chose for his ride is “All Children,” based on a quote from Carl Sandberg’s poem, “There is but one child in the world and all children is his name.”
“My journey across our beautiful country will be an experience that I will remember forever,” says Curtis. “I want to emphasize the wonderful work being done for children at the Indiana United Methodist Children’s Home. Today’s youth will one day be the adults that will lead our companies, churches and schools. If I can make a difference in their lives, then my trip was a
huge success.”
Those interested in making a per-mile pledge toward Curtis’ bike ride, call 1-800-919-8165. There are about 1,400 United Methodist churches in Indiana, with a combined 260,000 members.
