NAACP continued from page 6 “I’ve been a member of the NAACP for 25 years. Here in Muncie the organization has had successes that have impacted social, political and economical issues, locally and in the state. “I remember the NAACP’s involvement in the Northside School battle, although no racial pattern was legally proven, that action was significant in bringing about the building of the new Central High School in the late 60s. The NAACP also was instrumental in more African American state police being hired in the early 70s. I believe much of that success led to my being elected to the Muncie Community School Board. “The NAACP’s influence also brought about the Muncie Area Career Center and the naming of Washington-Carver Elementary School after the famous black scientist, George Washington-Carver. The Muncie Chapter has about 175 members.
