People need stable jobs, not lectures

As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., sat in a Birmingham jail during the Civil Rights campaign in that city, he received a letter form a group of concerned white clergymen. While they recognized the clear justice of his cause, they wondered whether it would not be better to ask for less and accept that one must wait for progress. The letter from the Birmingham jail laid out, for all Americans, the moral and social reasons why we can’t wait. I was reminded of Martin Luther King Jr. and the letter recently by the HumphreyHawkins Full Employment and Balanced Growth Act of 1976 - a measure that would commit the government to take all practical steps to lower

Although the issue was different, full employment, rather than Civil Rights, and involved black and white Americans, once again the less fortunate were being told that practical men had decided for them that is would be better to wait. Martin Luther King Jr. can no longer raise his voice in reply, but there is no questions what his answer would be. There are three burning reasons why America’s jobless cannot wait for some far-off day before we have full employment. The first reason is that our current high unemployment is nothing less than a guarantee that America’s future will result in deterioration rather than progress. The men and women breadwinners of

the whole health of our community depends. Men and women with a decent job are providing for their children and are models for their behavior. They are the support of their aging parents and a force for stability in the neighborhood and city. Clean and safe streets, decent housing, adequate medical care and even racial peace are all goals that can only come from a base of stable jobs. Without decent jobs, the special programs of the cautious nor lectures of the uncaring can do anything but add insult and indifference to the injury of unemployment.
