Soul Fest attracts hundreds to Indy park

by Reeshemah S. Harbin Traffic was backed-up for blocks recently as people made their way to Indianapolis’ Washington Park for the annual Indiana Black Expo SoulFest. Hundreds of people had gathered to enjoy the weekend festivities. There were plenty of activities at the Soul Fest for the whole family, especially kids. The Soul Fest included a small carnival with rides, games, and plenty of food —from barbecue ribs to fried fish. The food was delicious. Many vendors displayed their arts and crafts, clothing and tapes. There were lots of things to purchase at the festival. A favorite was the African arts and jewelry section. “I love looking at the different pictures of art-

work of these artists,” said Adrien Dixon, “I think it’s very unique.” The crowd was pretty controlled and friendly. During Soul Fest '93 there was a shooting incident that claimed the life of a teenager. This year the Black Expo committee was prepared for the crowd. Over a hundred police officers were hired to patrol the festival. Some officers rode around in golf carts, while others walked around the park. ‘This year it’s all good,” said James Bacon, enjoying the festival. “Nobody’s getting hurt.” People also enjoyed watching various performing acts on the BET (Black Entertainment Television) stage. One hip-hop group from Washington, D.C.,

called the Question Mark Asylum, performed, its debut single “Look Away Now.” Lots of teen-agers gathered in front of the stage to enjoy the group. There was also a Dust Bowl basketball tournament at the Soul Fest. Many teams from all over competed to show-off their basketball skills, including even teams from Muncie. WTLC, an Indianapolis radio station, was also at the Soul Fest. The station played music and started its own block party. Station personnel gave away many prizes to the audience, including Boyz II Men concert tickets. The SoulFest was a great success, according to those attending. ❖
