Normally The Muncie Times retains the right to edit all materials submitted for publication. Because of the unique nature of poetry, however, we have suspended this rule for “Poet’s Corner.” Some of the best poetry, particularly ethnic and folk poetry, has its charm in the unique way the writers express significant themes. African American poets often use the vernacular of the contemporary black experience, and their work is sometimes saturated with the language, rhythm and semantics of the streets. This language is their instrument, without which they cannot play their song. At The Muncie Times, we will not try to stifle creativity by the application of hard journalistic rules to creative and thoughtful speech. Blatantly offensive material will not be printed, of course, and we do reserve the right to c/j^e which works to publish!
POETS CORNER!
Clarence Motley and friends
For these newcomers that they might play After many passed, he is the same old Jack With that affectionate smile and a pat on the back. I composed this poem so people would know That Jack is the boy who made it so. Oh, let’s get together and do what we can To keep him from feeling he’s a forgotten man.

The Forgotten Man
A Crying Clown
Jack is a champion of yesterday And for basketball players he paved the way And made it possible for them to play.
When there are no words to be found. It means someone has become a crying clown. Slowly the painted tears are put in place, Wondering why a frown distorts my face.
There never was a more couregeous player than Jack; He was very humiliated but he fought right back, Some cursed, some jeered, some hit him and ran That’s the way they treated our own Jack Mann.
What life could have been without the fear, Stopping wife and children from getting too near. If only I would’ve learned how to read. Life could’ve been better and filled your need.
We were so proud of Jack I must say, The boy who fought so the colored boy could play, We haven't treated Jack just like we should, The boy who fought and done so much good.
It wasn ’t meant for either you or me, That’s just the way it happens you see. Being an illiterate child was not tmy fault. I was passed on and was never taught.
So I wonder if the new champs who are playing today Have been told that Jack really paved the way, With odds against him how Jack did play, For he knew he was paving the way.
So what happened in school 43 years ago. When I was dealt such a devastating blow. A lifetime of lose stolen from one look. As I read from my very first book.
