Down memory lane to days of ‘Colored Circles’ in newspapers
by Hurley C. Goodall In past years, Mancie’s African American community and its life style was structured around its churches and its community facilities, such as the Y.W.C.A., Y.M.C.A., Odd Fellows Hall and Veterans Clubs. There were also many social and fraternal clubs, most of which met in the members’ homes because meeting facilities in hotels and restaurants were denied to them because of their race. Starting in the 1920s and continuing into the 1960s, the Muncie Newspapers accommodated the black community by printing, on a periodic basis, columns written by African American writers providing information on the activities of these groups. In the Muncie Morning Star the column was called In Colored Circles. In the Muncie Evening Press it was called Colored Notes. Other columns were also printed. Most common was a column titled Phyllis Wheatley Branch Y. W. Some of those very prolific writers were Mrs. Carrie W. Phillips, Mrs. Charles Booher, Mrs. Georgia Lucas and Mrs. Grovelle Peele. The Muncie Times, in an effort to share some of those experiences with its readers, will print reproductions of some of those columns selected at random to give our readers a feel for what activities those early pioneers participated in, who the people involved were and what the names of their organizations were. The Times hopes you enjoy this voyage into the past. If you enjoy the columns, please let us know at The Times. \ Our first except is from In Colored Circles. It ap-
