Newspaper report misunderstood; negative rumors follow

by Judy Mays TT7 hat is the profile of a contemporary ft “mission” worker? As a Christian missionary, Dorothy L. Woods is convinced that it is one who is following Jesus to the door of the heart-the heart of people who are not only ravaged by the ills of society but who have themselves been the ravagers. Woods, who is employed at the Shepherd Center in Muncie, also serves on the usher board and is vicepresident of the Young Women’s Missionaries of Union Missionary Baptist Church. She is the mother of three sons, Terry, Ryan, and Corey. Woods has recently received attention because of her work at the Shepherd Center. In a July publication, Woods was pictured with two women who acknowledged that they were recovering cocaine users. Woods shared her knowledge of the pain of watch-

ing a loved one become addicted. The article was misconstrued. Surprisingly, Woods was rumored to have been a user also. “In a town like Muncie you know the rumors will fly, but what is important is that we do something to stop the menace and madness of drug abuse in our community. “If people had taken the time to read the story, it revealed that I was not an addict, but had family members who were. “On a positive note, I’ve already received calls

about starting a support group. This is not a black thing or a poverty thing--it is a community thing. We must all work to get rid of the problem,” Woods said. “I was really upset over the comment by Prosecutor Rick Reed in the July 4 issue of The Muncie Star. He said ‘You either have a child who knows he is loved and worth something...or he isn’t. It isn’t society that’s doing that to people. It’s where they come from, their families.’ ” Woods said she believes that while it is the family that is the nurturing unit, societal influences can be so great that they impair sound judgement. ‘‘We have to be in a position to help each other. After all, isn’t society made up of families? People are looking for a void to be filled--that void can only be filled by Christ,” she said. Anyone interested in joining a support group with Christ as the focus should call 286-0531.
