cancer. Early detection provides the best opportunity to treat breast cancer successfully. Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in American women: one out of nine women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. In 1992, over 180,000 new cases are projected, and 46,000 women will die of the disease. “Every woman is at risk for breast cancer, and risk increases with age,’’ said radiologist Sara Shull, M.D. “By following a simple three-step early detection program, many women could save their own lives.’’

• Practice monthly breast self-examinations - A woman’s physician can show her the proper method. • See a physician for regular breast examinations - At least every three years until 40, then every year. A mammogram is a simple radiographic test which can detect breast cancer in its earliest stages—when the chance for cure is highest. There are two types of mammogram: screening and diagnostic. A screening mammogram is recommended for women 35 and over who have no symptoms of breast disease. The exam is used to detect

early breast cancer before it can be felt during a physical examination. If a woman has signs or symptoms of breast disease her physician will request a diagnostic mammogram, which requires more specialized views of the breast than a screening mammogram, to determine specific areas of breast tissue that may be abnormal. Saint John’s has the technology and experience to detect and treat early breast cancer. The mammography services at Saint John’s were the first facilities in Anderson to be accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR). To achieve accreditation, Saint John’s met and exceeded the ACR requirements, including: • Trained, qualified professionals perform each mammogram and continue to further their education and skills in mammography. • Facilities use state-of-

the-art equipment that is dedicated only to mammography, ensuring that women receive optimum mammographic examinations with the lowest possible risk. • Board certified radiologists who read and interpret the mammogram films have successfully completed specialized training and are committed to extensive, ongoing education in mammography. • Radiologists are available to read mammogram daily at Saint John’s. • All mammogram films are processed while the patient is at our facilities to ensure that we have a quality image. • Saint John’s senior technologist, one of the first Indiana registered mammographers, checks the quality of all Saint John’s mammography equipment daily. All technologists performing mammogram have taken the

initiative to prepare and qualify for this special registry, only offered since October 1991. • Three film screen mammography units which offer the least radiation and clearest images of any breast cancer technology are utilized by Saint John’s Women’s Center. Members of the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month Board of Sponsors urge all Americans to learn the facts about breast cancer, and to join with their physicians in monitoring their health. “Mammography, combined with monthly selfexams and routine physical breast examinations by a doctor, offers the best chance of detecting breast cancer in its earliest stages when the cure rate is highest,” said Shull.
