Hoosiers Lead Other States In Powerball Ticket Sales

INDIANAPOLIS-It’s still too early to gauge the longrange effect, but 2 weeks after the Hoosier Lottery kicked off its new Powerball game, Indiana is No. 1 in sales among the 15 state lotteries that are offering the innovative lotto. “We are really pleased with the initial results. We are very encouraged to see that Hoosiers have taken to Powerball,” said Marty Gibbs, Hoosier Lottery deputy director. Sales totaled $1,516,146 in Indiana in the game’s first week (April 19 to 25), covering two draws. Se-cond-week sales for the third and fourth drawings (April 26 to May 2) hit $1,558,887, for a 2 week total of $3,075,033. Second among the 15 state lotteries was Wisconsin, with $2,836,730. The weekly totals for Wisconsin were $1,508,726, and $1,328,004, respectively. Minnesota was third with total sales of $1,914,474. Indiana is the only state to have a Powerball jackpot winner. Bert Morlan, the 85-year-old former mayor of Brazil, won the $6 million jackpot in the April 22 drawing, the first in the

new game. To win the Powerball jackpot, a player must pick five numbers out of a pool of 45 and one number-the Powerball-out of a second pool of 45. In addition to the jackpot prize, there are eight other ways to win prizes of up to $100,000. Lotto*America, the game that Powerball replaced on April 19, offered three winning combinations.

The Multi State Lottery, an association of lotteries in 14 states and the District of Columbia, offers the online game so that states with smaller populations can give their players the kinds of large jackpots that states with larger population bases have. Indiana has the largest population of the MUSL states at 5.52 million, followed by Missouri at 5.12

million, Wisconsin at 4.89 million and Minnesota at 4.37 million. ■ Indiana ranked among the top three in Lotto*America sales, accounting for 16 percent of weekly Lotto*America sales. Indiana is currently selling 19.6 percent brail Powerball tickets. Powerball sales in Indiana are running better than 69 percent ahead of levels for

the most recent comparable Lotto*America jackpots. Gibbs attributed Indiana’s early success with Powerball to an extensive retailer and player education effort that the Lottery embarked upon in March and April. Hoosier Lottery employees helped retrain the Lottery’s 2,800 on-line retailers to sell tickets for the new game and also held player education events at sites around the state. “The retailers, in addition to all of our staff, really worked hard to educate themselves as well as the players prior to the start of Powerball,” Gibbs said. The number of times each number had been drawn through May 2 in Lotto cash is: 1=09,2=18,3 = 14,4 = 11, 5 = 11,6=13,7=19,8 = 16, 9 = 15, 10=10, 11 = 11, 12 = 17, 13 = 13, 14 = 18, 15 = 19, 16 = 16, 17 = 09, 18 = 12, 19 = 18, 20=15, 21 = 16, 22=18, 23 = 12, 24 = 17, 25 = 14, 26 = 12, 27 = 14, 28 = 13, 29 = 17, 30=15, 31 = 11, 32=18, 33 = 07, 34 = 16, 35 = 16, 36 = 08, 37 = 10, 38 = 18, 39 = 22, 40 = 13, 41 = 14, 42=11, 43 = 20, 44 = 14 Number of draws: 105.

Father’s Day Tributes

(from pg. 20) rations. At the time, I believed that he was trying my patience. Now I realize that he was only being a protective father--and rightly so. In retrospect, I wish that I had heeded some of his advice on the dating scene. I had put my father on a pedestal for so long, that I was actually pained by the revelation that he was not omnipotent “Daddy” could not protect me from the pressures of honor studies in high school, bad dates or

the terrible awkwardness of puberty. Our father-daughter relationship has improved since I have gone away to college. Along with my newly acquired semi-independence, (he has informed me that my independence will not be complete until I move out of his house and pay my own bills) has come a desire to establish a more adult version of our relationship. He has put up with my complaints that he does not understand me or that he does not take me seriously.

I believe that my assertions are valid. But at the same time, I am still learning to accept him for the person that he is today. Just because he is my father does not mean that he is not entitled to his grumpy moments or to give me constructive criticism. I have also accepted the fact that he will always see me as his little girl, before he will ever recognize me as a woman. His mind set is that his role as a parent will transcend age, education and subsequent success.

My image of my father has changed. No longer do I see him as the man who can fix the world for me. I know that he has his share of flaws just like everyone else that I come into contact with. Even though we do not always get along smoothly, I harbor the utmost love and respect for him. I have learned that it takes a more mature love to encompass a person in his entirety than to love a concocted image of perfection that exists nowhere in this world.
