INVENTOR ALAN GARINGERAND NEW SPACE-AGE TOY, INFINITY WARP* Well-known author throws players a geometric curve with ‘ultimate marble game.'
THIS MOBIUS STRIP GAME IS NOT AN OLYMPIC SPORT YET, BUT IT SHOULD BE. Infinity Is Here Local Author’s New Game Taking Off at Warp Speed
While it looks like a nice piece of modem sculpture for an executive’s desk or a home, the Warp is really the "ultimate marble game of skill." Its basis is non-Euclidian geometry. According to the mathematical rules governing its shape, the Warp is a continuous strip of plexiglass with only one side and one edge. If you follow the edge, you end up back at the starting point without crossing a comer or a face of the figure. The trick is to put the forefinger of each hand into a dimple on the Warp and by careful pivoting keep the marble on the frosted track and not shooting off into space. That isn't easy. Even Garinger, despite lots of practice, can’t always keep the marble (actually a half-inch ball bearing) on the track. A different size ball changes the game altogether.
"Every curve and bend is unique in either direction, which is what makes it difficult,'’ Garinger said. “You have to think differently about space. You must visualize something different about the track and where the ball is oniL"
The Infinity Warp* is priced at S24.95 and is available in Muncie at Kelso, the Book End, William Botkin Jeweler, the Ball State University Book Store, Minnetrista Cultural Center Gift Shop, Ball Memorial Hospital Gift Shop, Jerry’s-Spartan West Pharmacy, The Book Shop, and Triple Play Baseball Card Shop (Muncie Mall).
