that’s when the devil will move in and try to cause more problems. “The man and the woman both have to want the marriage to work. They have to understand that in marriage there will be ups and downs. No matter how much you’re in love, there will be problems. That’s why too many marriages end in divorce, because no one is willing to compromise.” Her husband said, “If the spouses work as hard trying to please the husband or the wife, things would be much better. The chance of staying together decreases when people spend all their time trying to please themselves, instead of each other.” Campbell also said that lack of jobs and business opportunities is driving many young African Americans from Muncie. He said the lure of greener pastures elsewhere, especially out of Indiana, has led to a brain drain. Younger people, he said, think they can find more job openings in bigger cities. Mrs. Campbell said after she finished high school she was encouraged to go to Washington, D.C., where
there would be more opportunities. But she refused to go. “I wanted to stay in Muncie because this is my home,” she said. “I had to face the racial frustrations. One time, I remember being invited for an interview at 1 p.m. I got there on time. The (white) receptionist wanted to know why I was there. “I told her that I had a job interview at 1. She went back. When she returned she said the job had been filled. I knew it was not. How could it have been filled so fast? I had called earlier, before I went there, and was told the job was still open. I am sure the job was filled when she went back there and told them that I was black.” She said opportunities had improved for blacks, although discrimination had not been completely wiped out. “The opportunities have improvedr But some of the changes haven’t helped blacks. They still have to find ways to capitalize on the opportunities. You can look around today and I don’t think you can see any black businessman getting rich,” said Campbell.
