In 1981, Cicely Tyson starred in the movie, “The Marva Collins Story.” Both the Reagan and Bush administration have asked Mrs. Collins to serve as Secretary of Education. She declined, stating, “I can better serve my country in the classroom. ’ ’ The classes for children ages 6-11 were held Monday-Friday and out-of-town students resided with pre-screened local “adopted” families. Bryce stayed at the home of Robert and Laneta Going. In a telephone conversation, Mrs. Going revealed that she was a bit apprehensive in opening up her home to a child she had never met for such an extended period of time. “But”, she said, “I found Bryce to be a very unique child - I know that’s a broad term. Bryce enjoys nature - he enjoys life. He has a very unique laugh. What is really neat is that he and my son got along so well. Bryce really helped my son to develop good social skills.” Altogether there were 37 students attending the sessions from Oklahoma, Texas, Indiana, and Canada.
