Winners Announced For Police Safety Slogan Contest In July

Winners for the safety slogan contest conducted during the past month by Police Chief Harry Nelson and his department were announced Wednesday afternoon following the judges decisions after considering more than 900 presentations. The contest attracted many persons both adults and children throughout this community and has been given wide publicity through both

newspapers and radio during the past weeks of attempting to create greater traffic safetymindedness. Several local merchants and organizations contributed very worthwhile prizes to be awarded the Winners and the entire program has been considered a success. Three winners were chosen in both the adult and kiddies classes by Judges Ray Bogden,

director of the Boys Club, Leon Parkinson and John Ferris, editors of the Muncie Press and Star, and Don Burton, manager of WLBC radio station. First winning prizes went to Ralph E. Oxley, 214 E. North St., who will receive an expensive wrist watch donated by the Lawson Jewelry Store. The safety slogan submitted by Mr. Oxley is “If you sto pto think, you will think to stop.” Second choice among the adult presentations goes to Ester Case, 370 S. Main St., Farmland, Indiana who shall receive an ironing board with cover from the Ginn Maytag Washer Co., and $40 in cash. The slogan submitted for the second winner was “Avoid High-

Mrs. Grobey’s offering to the slogan contest was “There’s more left when you drive right.” The cash awarded to winners was contributed by each of the Moose, Elks, arid Eagles lodges together with six anonymous donors through the mails for the contest. The three winners among the children entries included 1 Janet Howell, 2304 E. Twelfth St., Jackie Summers, 1600 E. Kirby, and Mary Ann Newman, 320 W. Highland St.', all of Muncie. The first prize winner receives a bicycle donated by Sears Roebuck Co., the second award will be, $20 in cash, and the third winner re'ceives ten dollars together with a new pair of shoes cpntributed by the Jack & Jill Shoe Store. The number one slogan chosen

among the kiddies and won by Janet Howell was “Walk right, | bike right, never ride without a tail light.” The Summers slogan : which was given second place was “Have reflectors and a light if you want to bike at night.” The third winning slogan was “Drive your bike. Don’t just ride it.” The safety slogan contest was presented by the Muncie police department to assist influencing their drive to curb traffic accidents. The police have made numerous arrests during the past several’ weeks for traffic violations including speeding, running stop and go signals, and! other serious traffic charges. The campaign shall continue with the hopes of eliminating traffic hazards and! losses to both life and property. Public cooperation has been keenly felt and appreciated. Two-thirds of the road mileage in the United States has not been reached by road improvements.
