Joe McCarthy (Continued From Page One) McGrath and Director J. Edgar Hoover of the . B. I. faced the movie cameras and the floodlights, in a packed hearing room, to explain why the F. B. I. files could not be thrown open to the committee lest its whole coun-ter-spy work be imperiled. Threat by Hickenlooper Senator Bourke B. Hickenlooper, McCarthy’s chief partisan on the committee, asked them, “Don’t you know that Congress can refuse to vote the F. B. I. any money and so put it out of business?” That was a threat which impressed no one in the room, least of all the two officials at whom it was aimed. Also head by the committee were Mrs. Esther Brunauer and Haldore Hanson, two State Department employes whom McCarthy had accused of being proCommunists. They refused his charges in detail, and also gave some idea of the harm the Senator had done to them and their families by mentioning their names, even though he produced not a word of evidence to back up his stories. Hanson challenged McCarthy to repeat his charges outside Congress and face a libel suit.

The Golden Text is: “In the way jf righteousness is life; and in the oathway thereof there is no death” (Proverbs 12:28). Among the citations which comprise the Lesson-Sermon is the following from the Bible: “Art thou .not from everlasting, O Lord my God, mine Holy One? we shall not lie.
