Over on the Senate side, Senator Robert A. Taft indicated that he was afraid the statement would put people to sleep, despite Martin’s predictions. “. . • wordy, wordy, wordy,"

was Taft’s comment.

He and Senator Vandenberg and Milliken then took the document and went to work on it with a pair

of shears.

The resulting hash was palatable to no one. Some of the most scathing cpmments came from the Republican press. A few days later, when the national committee met in Chicago, the general attitude was, “How did we get into this box, anyhow?”

/More important was Iiow to get out of it. Out on a Limb* The W’ilkie wing attacked the program as reactionary. The reactionaries, on the other hand, were not satisfied—the statement “lacked teeth,’ they said and they didn’t like the way it “coddled” labor.. There was some talk of postponing action, but that couldn’t be done. The party was too far out on Joe Martin’s limb. So the national committee came through with a grudging indorsement of the program as a “statesmanlike declaration” and Chairman Brownell was instructed to name the seven-man subcommittee on “Development of National Pol-

icy.”

From the composition of the committee that Brownell . chose,

there can be little doubt about the direction in which G. O. P. policy will develop. BOSSES OF NAM (Continued from Page One) Nebraska, and even our own Homer Capehart, millionaire maker of juke boxes. “Thus”—to quote the same critic—“big business is assured that monopoly-free-enterprise bills and anti-labor bills will pass both houses. “NAM is the only outfit which controls many congressm'en and passes laws to suit itself. It also controls the Bar Associations. “NAM,” as the senate monograph concludes, “has America over a barrel.”

RECOGNITION (Continued from Page One) Furthermore, this country grants the highest rate of re-adjustment allowances for unemployed veterans larger pensions for the disabled and the most liberal standards of eligibility for vocational training and general education. Its hospitalization program is better. It offers higher preference in Civil Service employment. The programs here are more democratic, the benefits being identical regardless of rank. In other countries distinctions of rank are made.
