POST-DEMOCRAT, FRIDAY, JANUARY 18, 1946.

THE OLD JUDGE SAYS...

DICK: “I wonder how the distihers feel about that new movie built around an alcoholic.” OLD JUDGE: “It’s funny you asked that, • Dick... I was just reading a piece about it.” DIQK: “What did it say?” OLD JUDGE: “A very sensible statement. It said the beverage distillers are fully aware of this problem and are cooperating in every way possible to help solve it. The alcoholic is to the beverage distilling industry what the reckless driver is to the automobile industry. There is nothing wrong With the

automobile, but in the hands or a man who doesn’t know how to drive it or is reckless, it becomes a menace. Likewise, it’s not the use but the abuse of alcoholic beverages that causes trouble.” DICK: “Wonder why it is most men can drink moderately and others can’t?” OLD JUDGE:' 1 Intensive research at a great university has shown that most excessive drinkers are really sick people. They are suffering from some physical, social or emotional upset. And great strides have been made in developing clinical methods of helping these unfortunate oeople.”

Good Prospects For Food In ’46

By Ruth Hancock Recent indications are that civilians will have about eleven per cent more food in 1946 than they did in the five pre-war years, according to Paul Willis, President of Grocery Manufacturers of America addressing Conference of Food Editors at the Netherlands Plaza in Cincinnati Wednesday. • Prospects for meat supply are good, sugar shortage will be with us until end of 1946 as well as fats and oils. No important shortages in dairy products are looked for, with the exception of butter. Cutbacks in requirements of the armed services will mean more poultry will be available *to civilians than in recent months. The supply of eggs is expected to be fully equal to demand and at reduced prices. There will be ample quantities of fresh fruits and vegetables; and suplies of canned fruits and vegetables are expected to reach record levels. Potatoes and sweet potatoes will be in good supply, as will most of the food

grains.

Unless there is a drastic reduction of national income, look for an over-all civilian demand greater than in any previous peacetime year Hundreds of new products will show up on the grocery shelves. Some of these products will be slower in reaching the market than consumers have beer, led to believe but they will show up. Of importance to the homemaker, is intensified activity in re-design-ing packages aid containers to g ve maximum (on.enienco in the horn-'.
