(Continued from Page One) Gates then went “all-out” for Bradford and promised: “If any Marion county people get jobs, it will be with Jimmy Bradford’s en-dorsement-otherwise they don’t get the jobs.” Gates’ promisory note, now in Bradford’s keeping, has antagonized a ’large group of Marion county Republicans—voters who have long supported the Republican party, but who hate both Bradford and dirty machine politics. endorse, and they do not feel that .sflch appointees would bring any credit to the Republican party. They see in Gates’ “sell-out” to Bradford only disgrace and defeat for the Republican ticket. It was Bradford who with Henry Ostrom, Marion county G. O. P, chairman, forced the Marion county clerk to dismiss a Democratic deputy and hand the voters registration and the election bureau machinery over to Bradford’s faction. Referring to that coupe, Bradford said: “We won the election in Marion county when we put George Johnson and Carroll Kramer in charge of election machinery.” Then the “little pal” who now holds Gates in mortgage, proceeded to insult Republicans in all parts of Indiana, outside his own district. He said, “We’re going to elect Tom Dewey. We’ll carry Marion county by 20,000 votes. (Democratic election board officials recently reported finding that the names of 20,000 Marion county Democrats had been purged from the registration by the Republican

county clerk, rendering them ineligible to vote in November.) Bradford went on: “We can elect them or beat them right here in Indianapolis. We can beat anyone who doesn’t shoot square with Marion county.” Then he deplored the fact that people from the “sticks” get elected to state office and come to Indianapolis to live, become enamored with the town and never leave. Before Mr. Gates promised to turn the patronage over to Bradford, the latter suggested directly that Gates return to Columbia City at once without even awaiting the election
returns.
Gates has satisfied Bradford by his complete “sell-out,” but he has antagonized the Republicans of the rest of the state and likewise completely lost the confidence of a large number of Republicans of Marion county. Bradford’s boast that he will carry Marion county by 20,000 votes (after the G.O.P. had thrown the names of that many Democrats out of the files of registered voters) with the appointment of his henchmen in the clerk’s office to succeed a Democrat and a Republican who apparently would not yield to Bradford’s bidding is
enough to call for a grand jury investigation.
