Saipan New Hub m Pacific War

As the biggest naval task force in history battles for the island of Saipan (1) in-the Marianas group and for Saipan’s fine airfields, the importance of this particular spot—some 1465. miles from Tokyo and 1470 miles front the Philippines—becomes increasingly evident. Quite outside its proximity to the Bonins, located, about 600 miles from Japan, which have just been attacked by a big carrier task force, Saipan is reported to have flat areas made to order for big land air bases. Some already ai’e visioning the giant Superfortresses radiating from Saipan (as arrows show), as well as from China (2) to blast Nippon’s big manufacturing areas and slam at the Philippines. Presence of great naval forces there, plus other forces battering at the Bonins, indicate that the big smash is on. It isypointed out that the recent captUre of Biak (3) off New Guinea provides bases fo'r cracking at areas indicated arrows.

Weasel Is Newest Fighting Weapon

South Bend, Ind., July 7.— The army today has another fighting v/eapon, rivaling the jeep and peep in versatility. Studebaker Corporation officials announced that the “weasel”, so named because it skims over swampland, snow, mud and pavement so easily, was being turned out on the production line at the South Bend plant. The army service forces revealed the vehicle moves on a special rubber track and has been in secret manufacture for nearly two years. The carrier was described as “exterting only ground pressure about one-fourth that of a fully equipped infantryman.” Officials said it has a wide range of operations in all theaters of war.

Why a Farmer Should Buy and Keep War Bonds by G. W. Hedlund Head, Dept, of Agricultural Economics University of Pennsylvania

npHERE are many compelling A reasons why farmers should buy War Bonds. But there is one reason, often overlooked during times like the present, which I believe is fundamental to the individual farmer. That reason !&. Farmers should buy War Bonds now to protect their personal financial position against falling prices at some future time. The typical farmer has most if not all of his funds invested in his farming business. In other words, he has investments in real estate, livestock, equipment and other items that go to make up the usual farm business. Relatively few farmers have sizable investments outside of the farm. Farm investments are excellent hedges against inflation. By that I mean that when prices in general rise, usually the prices of farms, livestock and equipment also rise to some extent, so that the purchasing power of the investment changes but little. Therefore investments in farms retain their purchasing power better than investments in fixed dollar securities in times of rising prices. It is for this reason that many nonfarmers have been purchasing farms during recent years. By so doing they are attempting to buy something whose price will in-

crease as prices in general go up. But investments in farm real estate and other farm property do not offer protection or hedges against price declines. Whea prices of farm products decline, the prices of farm land and other farm property also decline. To make matters worse, net farm income declines more than almost anything else. Farmers must look elsewhere to protect themselves against deflation or price declines. A relatively small share of a typical farmer’s investments is in bonds, mortgages or other fixed dollar investments. Presumably such securities maintain their dollar value regardless of the trend in prices of other things. Therefore, good bonds offer protection or a hedge against deflation or price declines. The fact that most farmers are well hedged against inflation but are rather poorly hedged against deflation is one very sound reason why farmers should purchase War Bonds at this time. By purchasing Bonds they will partially hedge their finances against decreases in prices. They are already hedged against price increases. By being hedged on both sides, individual farmers will be in the safest position to weather the future, regardless of the trend in prices. U. S. Treasury Department

atmosphere which surrounds thte oarth’s surface is a vast sea ol odorless and colorless gases. Planes fly through this air in the lowei levels, relatively close to the earth, This body of air is divided into layers. The troposphere, which extends upward about seven miles, ia the layer closest to the earth’s surface. In this layer there is a rising and sinking of air, thus the prefix “tropo”-meaning “turning of air. M Here moisture is present and winds occur.

Women Oppose Warning To GOP Minneapolis, Minn.—Miss Marguerite M. Wells, 10 years president of the National League of Women Voters, Monday broke a decade of non-partisan silence to warn the Republican party that “the majority of women will not vote for the candidate the convention is planning to name on the first ballot.” It was apparent that she meant Governor Thomas E. Dewey of New York. Miss Wells, who has just returned to Minneapolis to live after retiring from her league post in Washington, called Lieutenant Commander Harold E. Stassen former Governor of Minnesota “the man-of the hour.” - - -o——BUY MORE BONDS

Pope Receives Secretary of War Vatican City, July 7. — United Slates Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson was received in a private audience by Pope Pius XII today. He was accompanied by Myron C Taylor, President Roosevelt’s personal representative to the Vatican and a 20 minute conference was held in the Papal library. Well informed Vatican sources indicated that important international questions as well as war problems were discussed. Stimson and Taylor also visited with Luigi Cardinal Maglione, papal secretary of state. Stimson arrived in Rome yesterday aboard a coal train, the first to arrive since the Allies took ever the city. He told Romans the Allies were in their city not as conquerors but as deliverers of a great ancient capital. Before going to Rome Stimson stopped off at Naples and took a jeep ride to the Cassino battle field. Stimson, wearing a light brown suit and a suq helmet, was met at the station by Lt. Gen. Mark W. Clark, commander of the Fifth army and Maj. Gen. Harry H. Johnson, military commander of Rome. He entered a four star car and rode three blocks through flag decorated streets to his hotel.

Robert W. Lyons Denies Report Indianapolis, July 7.—Robert W. Lyons, resigned Republican national committeeman, today denied reports coming from GOP sources, that he would handle federal patronage in Indiana if Gov. Thomas E. Dewey of New York were elected president. “Governor Dewey is a strict organization Republican and he will handle patronage through the regular party organization,” Lyons said. Lyons, wealthy chain store attorney, was the unofficial leader of Dewey forces in Indiana before the Republican convention. Dewey’s organization at Chicago indicated that Lyons still was high in favor. The Indianapolis and Washington attorney was forced to resign as national committeeman because of his unprecedented election less than an hour after the state party convention and because of his onetime Ku Klux Klan affiliations.

■No one will deny that a dollar will buy more in some sections oil the country than in others—and we will all agree that the first part of 1 our earnings is more important than the second because those first dollars are needed for necessities. And ail of us can easily see that a. Federally - administered, compulsory social insurance system, requiring the same percentage f of contributions and paying benefits a$ the same rat$ throughout the country, will not take the income variations, shown in the chart, into account. Thus six percent a year would mean a great deal more to the man with an income of $450 annually than to the man having an-income, of over $1000 a year. Likewise a' benefit of, say, $40 a month wouldi mean a great deal more to the resi*s dent of a state where living cost^ are relatively lojv, than to the resident of a state in' which they are high. In discussing future social security, shouldn’t we seek equality df treatment throughout the coun* try?

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE SERVICES “Sacrament” is the subject of the Lesson-Sermon in all Churches of Christ, Scientist, on Sunday, July 9. The Golden Text is: “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me” (Psalms 51:10). Among the citations which comprise the Lesson-Sermon is the following from the Bible: “And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him. And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation. And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him” (Luke 22:89-43). The Lesson-Sermon also includes the following passages from the Christian Science textbook,“Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” by Mary Baker Eddy: “Thoughts unspoken are not unknown to the divine Mind. Desire is prayer” (p. 1). “Consistent prayer is the desire to do right. Prayer means that we desire to walk and will walk in the light so far as we receive it, even though with bleeding footsteps, and that waiting patiently on the Lord, we will leave our real desires to be rewarded by Him” (p. 9).
