Gov. Charles Edison States Charges Washington, Jan. 14. — Charges that the Hoosevelt administration was keeping the Hague machine alive in New Jersey with feelings of federal patronage were being assayed here today in terms of presidential year politics. Gov. Charles Edison, retiring Democrat, who formerly was a member of President Roosevelt’s cabinet, stated the charges last Friday in citing the appointment of Dr. Edward J. Jennings, a Hague man, to be postmaster at Trenton

despite opposition by the nonHague elements of the state Democratic organization. Similarly earlier this year Mr. Roosevelt nominated to the federal bench in New Jersey former U. S. Sen. William H. Smathers who had been defeated in the 1912 elections and who was backed by Hague for the post. Edison appeared before a senate committee here in opposition to the nomination which, nevertheless, was confirmed. At a Trenton press conference Edison said that without such federal patronage, Hague “would have been a dead duck long ago—in fact that is all he is living on now.” Edison is the son of the late

Thomas A. Edison. He entered the Roosevelt administration as an official of the Federal Housing Authority, and from 1939 to 1940 he served as assistant secretary and acting secretary of the navy. He challenged Hague’s machine soon after he was elected governor of Aew Jersey in 1940. The policy of appeasing Hague has been cited by anti-Roosevelt Democrats and Republicans as an indication that the president intended to seek a fourth term since it is to he expected that the mayor will control the New Jersey delegation to the Democratic national convention this year. Edison's pointed complaint gives Republicans some useful presidential-year arguments in support of their frequent charge that the Roosevelt administration is, or has been, aligned with questionable political machines in several large cities, including New York, Chicago, Kansas City, Memphis and Jersey City. Hague was not an FRBC man— an almost forgotten alphabetical arrangement which signified “for Roosevelt before Chicago.” Instead Hague at the 1932 Democratic national convention which nominated Mr. Roosevelt for his first term was one of the stop-Roosevelt high command in company with Alfred E. Smith, former Sen. James A. Reed of Missouri, former Gov.

Port Huron, Mich., Jan. 11.—A $2,500,000 fire which swept through the Marysville factory of the Morton Salt Co., was under control today after 200 firemen battled flames in the three-story structures for eight hours. Capt. Wilbur Patrick of the Port Huron fire department said his crew reported the power house and a warehouse were the only buildings saved of the nine structures valued at $3,000,000. Fred Phillbrick, company manager, estimated the loss at $2,500,000. —,—o— San Francisco was the first city in the nation to have a civic opera house and its own permanent opera troupe.

(Continued from ^age One) hoard of county commissioners, will seek re-nomination and another candidate will be needed in the east district of the county which is now represented by Hugh Botkin, Republican. Waldo Booher of Albany was the Democratic nominee for county fcommissioner in this district during the 1942 election. Lester E. Holloway is serving his last year as county treasurer and is prohibted by law to run for that office in 1944. William Bogir, manager of the Welfare Loan company, has been mentioned as a possible candidate by the Democrats for county treasurer. The sheriff’s office appears to have the greatest appeal among Democratic candidates so .far. Sam Gray who served one term in that office and was succeeded by Charles Snodgrass, Republican, on January first is known to be a candidate for re-nomination again this year. Fred DeElliott, former head of the city traffic department and now employed with the Warner Machine Products Company, is also a candidate for sheriff in 1944. Other possible Democartic contenders are Ray Babbitt who was defeated by Gray in the 1942 primary, and Tom Bennington, son of the late Frank Bennington who served many years as captain of the Muncie police department. Since Tom Cannon, former prosecuting attorney, is now serving in the armed forces, it is unknown who might be a candidate among the Democrats for this office. Ralph Rector, present prosecutor, will no doubt bd the G. O. P. nominee for re-election. Gene Williams may enter the Democratic primary since he had previously sought this nomination in recent years. Elmer Card and Gallon Stephens served one term each as county surveyor and coroner and may be the Democratis nominees this year for their respective offices. Lester Janney is the present county survyor and J. W. Thornburg is coroner, both being Republicans.

Joseph B. Ely, Massachusetts, and former Gov. William H. (Alfalfa Bill) Mtirray of Oklahoma. Smith bolted Mr. Roosevelt in 1936 to support Alt M. Landon, the Republican presidential nominee, but long since has become reconciled with the Roosevelt administration. Ely yesterday was reported in Boston dispatches to be seeking to head an anti-Roos-evelt slate of delegates to this year’s Democratic national convention. Hague, however, knew a trend when he saw one and' began climbing onto the Roosevelt bandwagon soon after the landslide returns of the 1932 presidential election were in. Since then, Hague has been for

Mr. Roosevelt and evidently still is so inclined. On last June 13 his nephew, City Commissioner Frank H. Eggers, speaking for the mayor said: “It would be a calamity for this country and the world if President Roosevelt was not available to sit in at the Peace conference.’ Consumer Will Get More Fresh Food Washington, Jan. 14.—The War Food Administration reported to day that civilians will have more fresh but fewer canned vegetables during the remainder of this win-

ter than they did in the same months of last year. The aggregate average of 14 fresh-market truck crops for harvest during the winter season was estimated at 21 per cent larger than last winter. The civilian supply of canned vegetables, how ever, is 20 to 25 per cent less thao a year ago. Florida, Texas and California commercial truck farmers have indicated they plan to grow more early spring cabbage and spring onions than they did last year. Storage stocks of cabbage ami onions were said to be considerably smaller than a' year ago. The report i>n canned vegetables did not include home canning from victory gardens. The WFA said the home canned supplies would at least partially offset the smaller supply available to civilians from commercial canneries. The supply of potatoes was said to be ample to meet all demands, in contrast with the potato shortage last spring. The 1943 potato crop set an all-time record of 465,000,000 bushels. An increased supply of spring potatoes was indicated by reports

from Florida and Texas that growers would increase their acreage over last year by about 1-6. Civilian supplies of sweet potatoes and beans are about the same as a year ago, but 50 per cent more dried peas are available. o State Leads In Loan Drive Indianapolis, Jan. 14. — Indiana takes the lead for the nation by launching the $14,000,000,000 4th War Loan Drive, with state and national labor officials staging the initial rally. William Green, president of the American Federation of Labor; Jamqs B. Carey, national secretarytreasurer of the Congress of Industrial Oi’ganizations, and Ted R. Gamble, national director of the treasury’s war finance committee, spoke over a coast-to-coast (NBC) radio network. Green and Carey appear as result of the treasury’s request that organized labor take the major load in this national campaign, which opens in all other states on

Jan. 18. Gov. Henry F. Schrickei’ and Eugene C. Pulliam. Indiana war finance committee chairman, share the broadcast. Pulliam announced that although the national drive does not begin on a national scale until Jan. 18, ail bonds purchased in Indiana since Jan. 1 would be credited to the state’s quota of $233,000,000. About 600 local labor leaders will take part in directing the state campaign. Waste Paper Aid To Fire Protection

Chicago, Jan. 14.—The National Safety Council urged the public to combine the patriotism of collecting waste paper with the fundamentals of fire protection. “Thousands of fires start annually by waste paper accumulation,” said Ned H. Dearborn, executive vice-president of the council. “Giving waste paper to the war effort is one of the best fire protective measures a family can adopt.”

Poland Considers Russian Offer

London, Jan. 13—The Polish exile government met Tuesday to consider Russia’s offer to return to Poland some 7,000 or more of the 77,700 square miles occupied Uy the Red army in 1939, and a favorable reply was , anticipated within the next 48 hours. Russia made the offer early today -as a compromise toward settlement of the Soviet-Polish border dispute, the most serious threat lo unity among the United Nations to date. The Soviets also offered to conclude a treaty of mutual

SCORE FIGHT ON SECURITY PLAN

Press Denounces Propaganda As Threat To Program ~

A propaganda campaign being waged against the medical care sections of the Wagner-Murray-Dingell social security bill by the National Physicians Committee for the Extension of Medical Service is a serious threat to the program and Democratic leaders and newspapers anxious to expand the security program are fighting back to expose the false charges. The committee, acting with approval of the A.M.A., has stooped in its propaganda campaign to “methods of misrepresentation of which a professional body should be ashamed,” charges the Chicago Sun. Senator Murray of Montana has been given support from many newspapers in his criticism of the propaganda campaign and there appears no doubt his criticism is justified. The security bill proposed a national health insurance fund, financed by contributions of employers and employes and administered by the Surgeon General with an advisory council appointed by medidal associates themselves. This insurance fund would pay doctor bills of insured workers who received medical care from members of physician panels in each community. If would also pay for certain specialist services, laboratory work and a limited degree of hospitalization. alliance with Poland against the Germans. The Polish qxile government was known to be reluctant to back down on its demand for the entire territory occupied by Russia by agreement with Germany, but wellinformed sources said the situation now had reached the stage where the Poles “must accept or shut up.” Some quarters believed it not unlikely that the Soviet offer would precipitate a Polish cabinet crisis resulting in the resignation of the present government or a complete re-shuffle, especially since the Russians attacked the incumbents as incapable. The Russians said the present j cabinet, “severed from its people,” had proved unable to establish friendly relations with the Soviet union or to organize “an active struggle against the German invaders of Poland itself.” The cabinet, “by its incorrect policy, often plays into the hands of the German invaders,” the Soviet statement said. Well-informed sources here believed Russia’s offer, which suggested the Gurzon line of 1919 as a possible Soviet-Polish boundary, would be the final gesture by Premier Josef Stalin during the war with the possibility that, if the question were left until after the war, Poland might lose much more territory. Russia broke off relations with the exile government last April 26 after the Poles had asked the international Red Cross to invests gate a German propaganda claim that the Soviets had massacred Polish army officers.
