SPEEDY START DUE ON NAVY'S 'GATOR TANKS
Amphibians To Be Made At Dunedin, Fla., Factory
Dunedin, Fla.—An amphibian tank, which will enable the navy to pioneer an important development in offensive warfare, will go into production here early this year. The 8,000-pound sea-and-land-going mechanical monsters are the invention of Donald Roebling, wealthy engineer whose grandfather built the Brooklyn Bridge. Roebling has been granted a $3,500,000 navy contract for construction of an initial order of 200 of his “alligator,” as the tanks are called. The navy also obtained an option calling for construction of an additional 200 alligators, boosting total expenditure to $6,600,000. Recent navy tests at Norfolk, Va., showed the alligator to be equally at home in land, water or swamp. The tank can be launched at sea, will splash shoreward at 10 miles an hour in the heaviest surf, and then chug away at nearly 5 miles an hour. Military experts believe the alliga*-’’ tank is the solution to the problem of landing a fighting force on an enemy coast under fire —a problem that has cost the lives of thousands of troops in past and present wars. They point out that a practical amphibian might have been a determining factor in such actions as that at Gallipoli, in the World war, when the Allies lost 30,000 men in an attempt to force an open beach under withering Turkish fire. Some observers feel that the successful development of an amphibian tank by German militarists may conceivably pave the way for the long-awaited invasion of England. Plant Made Ready The navy’s ’gator tanks will be constructed in a revamped citrus canning plant, which is now undergoing a $200,000 remodeling program to fit it for the task. Roebling designed his amphibian tractor, forerunner of the alligator tank, as a mercy vehicle. It was intended for rescue work in Florida coastal areas devastated by hurricane and tidal waves. The original model has been available to the Coast Guard and other rescue agencies for several years. o Legal Notice

Yosemite Tree Oddly Thrives Without Soil
Yosemite National Park, Cal.—Occasioned by the questions of tourists, a study of a lone pine tree that grows out of a solid rock surface high above the Yosemite
Valley has been made by the National Park Service. Naturalists said the tree, which is 80 foot tall, grows out of a fissure in the granite face known as El Capitan. Its food is manufactured in its leaves from water and cardon dioxide, and such minerals as it requires may be obtained from the rock. Its supply of moisture apparently is gained from winter rain and snow. Thus it thrives without soil.
The experts were forced to study the tree with glasses and other instruments from the nearest vantage point. Growing 1,157 feet above the valley floor, the famed pine is inaccessible. o RAIL TRAFFIC GROWS
Railways of Eire are carrying many more passengers than a year ago.
PERSERVERANCE PAR EXCELLENT It took Army Recruiting Sergeant Clyde Walker 19 years—hut he got his man. Walker, who heads the Parkersburg, West Virginia Recruiting Office, first invited his friend, Lawrence Elwood McPherson, Rockford, Ohio, to join the Army back in 1921 when Walker himself signed up. “But Elwood wouldn’t listen,” Walker explained, ^ adding, “I’d see him about every four or five years and ask him again. Still he wouldn’t listen to me.” This week McPherson came into the Parkersburg Recruiting Station and said: “WSlker, I want to join the Army.” He was assigned to the 11th Infantry at Fort Benjamin Tarrison, ndiana. “It took me 19 years to get McPherson,” confided Walker, “but young men today don’t have to wait even one day to get into the service. We have a thousand openings right now in the Panama branch of the Aid Corps for physically fit, single men at least 18 years old and not yet 35 who have a high school education and want to become mechanics.” — o BUILD RIVER STEAMERS Shallow-draft steam vessels or use on the upper Yangtze above the rapids are being constructed in Chungking, China
