THE POST-DEMOCRAT FRIDAY, JANUARY 19, 1940.
The Nail On The Head President Roosevelt uttered a truism in his Jackson Day address when he declared that the general public is interested more in government than in politics. And in speaking thus he was calling attention to the great army of independent voters who decide elections. In Indiana, for instances, the number of polled Democratic Republican voters is about a stand-off and elections are decided by those voters who “feel perfectly free to vote for one or more candidates of another party, come election day, and on the other hand, sometiipes uphold party principles even when precinct captains decide to ‘take a walk’.” And in making this plea for greater interest in a continuation of Good Government, the president summed up thus: “I am convinced that most people in the United States do have a sense-with a real feeling of pleasure in the moralities invoTv'edthat we have been moving forward in these later years in the right direction. “They are really glad that on the whole, the farmer is no longer an economist outcast and is getting better prices for his crops. “They are glad that we are slowly working out for labor greater privileges with greater responsibilities. “They are glad that gamblers and speculators are no longer the most honored element in our economic life. ' “They are glad that certain opportunities for security, once only available to the rich, like old age insurance, are becoming available to the poor. - “They are glad that we are beginning to conserve the natural resources of our soil, our rivers, and our trees for the good of our children; that we have improved our roads and added to our parks and built hundreds of schools; that we are bringing to every housewife cheap electricity’s relief from drudgery; that we have made our banks safe and’brought pur courts up to date; that we have kept millions of people out of the breadlines. “They are glad that Government is daily becoming more honest and more decent.”
FARM INCOME IN CASH FOR ’39 AVERAGE $1,197 Sum Represents $259 For Each Person On Land
,
Washington—The average farmer in 1939 had a cash income of $1,197, reports gathered by the Bureau of Agricultural Economics
show.
That income was made up of $1,100 from the sale of farm commodities and $97 in government benefit payments. It was an average of $2&9 for each of the approximately 33,000,000 persons living on farms. No figures were available for comparison with city income. Economists 'said that When the food raised on farms for home consumption is taken into account there probably would be a difference of less than $100 per family. A slight increase over 1938 farm income was largely accounted for by $650,000,000 in government benefit payments — $250,000,000 more in 1939 than in 1938. Sharp commodity price rises late in the years sent the income trend upward, but farmers did not get the full benefit since they had sold most of their crops. Top Income in 1919. Farm income, however, is far belcw that of early post-war years. In 1919 the average farmer had a cash income of $2,231, a record high., It dropped gradually to $1,247 in 1921 and then began a climb to $1.78^ i n 1929. The degression forced the average do,\n to $1,412 in 1930; $983 in 1931 then to $717, the lowest in nearly 50 years, in 1932. Government benefit payments began pouring into farm pockets in 1933 to raise the average to $805. It climbed to $993 in 1934 and to $1,107 in 1935. The average was $1,244 in 1936, $1,336 in 1937, and $1,184 in 1938. The total 1939 cash income was 29 per cent greater than the pre-world war average of $5,900,000,000, the bureau said. The number of farms and the farm population has changed little during the period covered by the report. Although the average farm cash income is much larger than it was 25 to 30 years ago, farm purchasing power is smaller. o WATCHMAN NEVER MISSES NIGHT IN PAST 21 YEARS
Racine, Wis.—Harry L. Kelley, Racine, lays claim to some kind of record for consistent employment. Kelley, a merchant policeman employed by business men to make nightly rounds of their stores to see that the doors are locked, certain lights are on and to protect the establishments from vandals, has worked nine hours a night, seven nights a week for 21 yaers without ever missing a night or taking a vacation. Kelley figures that he has worked some 68,000 hours without missing. FAMILY WASHING DELAYED York, Pa. — Mrs. James Martin put the family clothes in the washing machine and snapped the switch on but the machine refused to run. A hastily summoned electrician found the motor missing. A boarder was charged with larceny.
Unusual Honor Fails To Sway Rural Teacher
Spokane, Wash.—The entire student body—12 in number—turned out tp welcome Mrs. Gladys D. Barnes back to her “little school among the pines” the day she was elected president of the Washington Education Association. The first rural teacher in the history of the association to be chosen president, Mrs. Barnes presides over a school that is histor-
ically famous.
The building was erected 50 years ago—the same year that
Washington was admitted to the union—and has withstood the ravages of time with few improvements. It has no electric lights and an old-fashioned stove supplies the heat. Pupils sit at desks on which are carved the names and initials of their fathers and mothers. But Mrs. Barnes, who once was principal of a large city school, would not change for all of her, august position “There is an independence here that you won’t .find in larger schools,” she says. “These children learn not only to help themselves but to help each other.” o— , Demand for automobiles is increasing in Italy this 1 year.
