THE SCHOOL QITY OF MUNCIE. INDIANA. By VERNON G. DAVIS. Secretary. Board of Trustees. Dalrd: January 10, 1939.
Anderson, Jan. 13.—“When the storms have cleared away and history turns the cold spotlight on this period in which we are living, the American people will pay tribute to the memory of Franklin D. Roosevelt as the man who saved the world from dictatorships,” declared Judge Curtis G. Shake of the Indiana Supreme court here Wednesday night. Addressing 400 Democrats at a Jackson Day Banquet at the Y. M. C. A.,. Judge Shake asserted that this nation was nearest to dictatorship in 1932 when 'people were saying “what we need is a man in White House who can do someuiing.” This fear of dictatorship was dispersed when Roosevelt was elected and did something, according to the speaker. Says Emergencies Bear Dictators “People,” he said, “turned to dictators to get quick action in times of emergency,” but pointed out that in so doing they lost their voice in government. He called democracy safer, but said the process was slower because the ideas come from the people and it took time for public opinion to crystalize. “In 1940,” continued Judge Shake, “the American people are going to face the direct issue of whether they will turn back or go forward with the program of putting Christianity into our everyday life. The New Deal is nothing more than bringing government, .q .little. Closer to the people.” Judge Shake said that men could be judged by their homes, and then he .described Monticello, home of Thomas Jefferson, and The Hermitage, home of Andrew Jackson, and told how they reflected the character of the two patriots. He predicted that the time would come when the Roosevelt residence in Hyde Park would be the equal of their homes as national shrines. o H€LP WANTED
An airplane without a pilot is as useless as a bird with one wing; neither can take to the air. This country needs pilots if we are to be able adequately to defend ourselves in the event we are aggressed. Last year 5,000 new pilot licenses were issued in the U. S'. The total now is 22,000. That was accomplished -by private initiative; it shows what could be accom-
plished by government aid. And this field is properly one for government aid. Mr. Roosevelt wants to train 20,000 pilots a year. The proposal is sound. But it is unfortunate that the job has been turned over to Aubrey Williams, new National Youth administrator, who knows nothing about aviation and whose words and deeds mark him one of the most radical men in Washington.—Herald Examiner. VAST WAR DATA GO TO LIBRARY
Philadelphia. — A collection of thousands of clippings from Philadelphia and New York newspapers comprising a contemporary history of the World War has been presented to the University of Pennsylvania library by Mrs. Edward T. Stotesbury. The 240 bound scrapbooks of the collection, contained in specially constructed bookcases, were assembled under Mrs. Stotesbury’s direction during the war, and is believed one of the^ most extensive of its kind in the United States. Librarian C. Seymor Thompson announced that the collection would be preserved as a memorial to Mrs. Stotesbury’s late husband, the internationally known financier who served as a trustee of the university from 1911 until his death in 1938. The first clipping, dated July 25, 1914, discloses that the Austrian minister has been instructed to leave Belgrade unless Serbia complies with the demands which followed the Sarajevo assassinations. The collection is closed with en< tries from newspapers of July 31, 1919. Clippings include detailed accounts of military and naval operations in virtually every field ol activitiy in any way related to the World War. Editorials, photographs, feature stories and cartoons were included with news stories.
JOURNAL IN ROW OF 1784 IS GIFT
Philadelphia.—A copy of the first issue of the Courier de PAmerlque, first French newspaper published in the United States, has been presented to the University of Pennsylvania library, which was responsible indirectly for the enforced discontinuance of the paper after 26 issues. Publication of the Courier began here in 1784. The French newspaper was opposed violently to the monarchy in France and when, in that same year, King Louis XVI presented 100 volumes to the library, the Courier criticized university authorities scornfully for accepting them. The dispute led to a bitter controversy between the paper and a number of prominent citizens, including Francis Hopkinson, a signer of the Declaratin of Independence and a member of the university’s first graduating class. As a result the Courier was virtually suppressed. Uniform postal rates were not in existence at that time and the postmaster-general
simply increased rates on the Courier to a prohibitive figure and the paper was forced to suspend publication. The university library’s copy of the Couriers’ first issue was a gift of Luther Martin, 3rd, of New York, former president of the General Alumni Society. The 100 volumes presented by Louis XVI in 1784 will now share interest with a collection of more than 600 contemporary French works in the fields of literature, art, the classics, history and science, presented to the library recently by France’s department of education. o YOUTH SHAVES HIS LUCK TOO CLOSELY AND LOSES
Pasadena, Cal.—Joseph Gibson, 24, is out for the world’s championship as a “hard lucker.” Out of work for months, Gisbon at last got a job. The night before he was to report to work, he swerved on his motorcyqle to avoid ah oncoming car and wound up with a broken foot, a broken leg and other injuries that will hospitalize him for months. Another inch would have enabled him to avoid the crash.
