Unique Event at the White House

Why Don’t You Try One?

Six beautiful ,ihite hauled a white Sieigh

horses I

over the

snows through iiie streets of Washington in ’ate December, 1802, and stopped in front of the White House where a mammoth Massachusetts chi-ese was delivered to President Thomas Jefferson. History loves to repeat itse and the Jeffersonian event left behind it so much good will and such abundant pleasant recollections that one of the features of National Cheese Week witnesses six beautiful white horses again hauling a white sleigh to the White House for a ceremony in which President Roosevelt was scheduled to become the possessor of an other mammoth cheese. This time it comes from Weyauwega, Wisconsin, where it was made by Ray mono J. Patton, a master-cheeSe-maker. It weighs 1,250 pounds and is of the same size and proportion as the Jefferson t neese. President Roosevelt in turn, transferred the gift to charitable organizations in Washington, to help them provide for the needy of

the city.

This unique ceremony is a reminder that cheese has been an item of food in the world for five thousand years, that cheese-mas ing flourished as an industry moie than two thousand years before the beginning of the Christian era. There are more than foui hundred different varieties of cheese in the woild and over two hundred are known and produced in America. The ceremony at the White House was one of the outstanding events in the nation-wide observance when annual tribute is paid to King Cheese, through the National Cheese Week celebration.

r ES, we’re having a marshmallow toast, and look at this big, fat, puffy one 1 just ptilled out of the tire! Boy, 1 just wish you could try one—because they’re swell! It all happened this way. This morning mom was working around the fireplace, polishing the andirons and washing the hearth, etc. She had her dan of cleanser (mom says she uses only the safe one which is made with seismotite and doesn’t scratch) there, too—and when I asked her why she was being so spick and span, she told me just ‘to wait.’ So I did, and what did she do but ’sprise me by asking in the whole bunch of fellows for a marshmallow toast around the fireplace!”
