The Townsend plan of pension, recovery and annuity is still very much alive. Recently, over 5,000 attended a Townsend meeting in Indianapolis.

Jesse James and John Dillinger were both advocates of a “share-the-wealth” program, weren’t they? Also Bruno Richard Hauptmann should be included in'this-group.

A rabbit and a hare are similar but not the same. Hares are generally larger than rabbits, have longer ears and longer hind legs. They do not live in burrows, like the cotton tail rabbit, but in the open among rocks, and thickets. The hare’s color often changes with the season.

Only four times m the history of the United States has the date set for the inauguration of a newly elected President fallen on Sunday. Only once during the remainder of the present century will March 4th fall on Sunday in an inauguration year. This will occur in 1945.

“Science,” wrote Huxley, “is organized common sense.”

Are you a farmer? A farmer is classified as one having three acres of land and spending the major part of his time on the land with sales amounting to $250 or more a year.

Ethel G. Smith, Shellon, Conn., has not missed a Sunday school session RrfS years. One of the largest public libraries in the country now has a guard at the door where, according to the library officials, “the library was being stolen one book at a time.” The Federal Government has appropriated $49,750,000 for old-age pensions. The government will match dollar-for -dollar state benefits up to $15 per month. Already thirty-three states and Ala’ska have state benefits for the aged.

Benito Mussolini, of Italy, has served his country since 1928 without salary or income from the government.

In Chicago, Donald Conley was arrested for locking his dog in a closed car while it was parked in the sun in the loop for four hours. The charge was “cruelty to animals.”

“The fool that far Is sent, Some wisdom to attain, Returns an idiot, as he went, And brings the fool again.” —o Elder Morgan Is a Prophet On the floor of the senate recently Senator Couzens read an account of a conversation held during a previous depression between the elder J. P. Morgan and the late Rev. Dr. W. S. Rainsford. Asked what the trouble was with business, Mr. Morgan replied: “The trouble is that fools won’t show each other their books.” Dr. Rainsford remarked that Mr. Morgan would not be willing to show his own books and the financier remarked: “Well, rector, the time is coming when all business will have to be done in glass pockets.” o All But Finland Again in Default On June 15, a number of notes went out from the State Department in Washington. Addressed to the principal foreign powers, they politely informed them that their annual installments on the Wardebt were due and payable. As everyone knew, all the notes, with a single exception, represented a waste of postage and effort, •country money had previously inEvery major power owing this formed us, directly or indirectly, that the installments would not be paid. Finland, which remitted its $165,453. It is doubtful if anything in history has done so much to promote respect for that little nation in the United States as its projnptness in meeting its debt. The Senate showed its gratitude by passing a hill to appropriate $300,000 for erection of a diplomatic and consular building in Helsingfors. America made war loans to twenty nations, for a total of $10,338,000,000. $2,747,000,000 of that has been returned. However, overdue interest payments continue to increase the debts which will probably remain forever in the category of repudiated obligations.

Dust Preventative Treatment for 970 Miles of Highway

A program for making 970 miles of gravel and stone-surfaced state highways dustless, adding to the pleasure and safety of motorists using these highways, was announced today by Janies D. Adams, chairman of the state highway commission. Bids for the application of dust preventative on gravel and stone-surfaced highways in the Fort Wayne, Seymour, Greenfield, Vincennes, Crawfordsville and LaPorte districts have been received. Applications of read oil and tar preparations on the gravel and stone-surfaced state highways' selected by the maintenance division, will supplement the surface treatment program already inaugurated and to he completed during the early part of August. Approximately 900 miles of state highways are being surfaced this year by the State Highway Commission. Extensive Program Dust preventative treatment is being placed on approximately 250 more miles of state highways this year than in 1934 when 725 miles of highways were treated. The 1935 program is the most extensive that the state highway commission has adopted and will require the application of slightly more than four million gallons of road oil and tar to the highways selected for this treatment. The mileage to be treated in each of the six state highway districts is: Fort Wayne district, 171 miles; Greenfield district, lip miles; Seymour district, 175 miles; Vincennes district, 132 miles; LaPorte district, 148 miles, and Crawfordsville district, 226 miles. This work is being placed under contract rapidly and will be completed as early as working conditions permit, causing as little inconvenience to motorists as possible. ----- “FIVE, TEN—AND UP,” George Allan England’s Gripping Story of Love, Diamonds and Mystery^ begins in The American Weekly, the Magazine distributed with NEXT SUNDAY’S HERALD AND EXAMINER.

IS GREATEST LEGISLATION IN 100 YEARS

Will Spell the Uidtimate Doom of the Poorhouse.

President Roosevelt’s social security bill has been characterized the “greatest piece of social legislation in 100 years” by a churchman who addressed a gathering at Butler University. Within its pro-

visions for pensioning the aged, this speaker, an expert on church pensions, sees possibilities that after thirty years of the Roosevelt plan, poor houses will be vanished, taxes will be reduced for care of the aged and public poor relief rolls will be a thing of the past. With a wholly non-partisan appraisal of the legislation, he said: “It will spell the ultimate doom of the poorhouse and undoubtedly will practically eliminate most of the institutional homes for the aged. It will give a sense of stability and security to the millions of salaried people as they toil through their active years. They will know that at the end there will be something for their old age which they have helped to create. Much of the unrest and discontent among the laboring classes may be done away with by this plan.”

An extra rich flavor is imparted through the addition of whipped cream and domestic sherry wine. You will surely ask for more. The recipe is as follows; 1 cup milk *

cup sugar egg yolks

egg whites ~ tablespoon gelatine soaked in

4 tablespoons cold milk La cup domestic sherry wine T4 teaspoon salt Pinch grated nutmeg 1 cup whipped cream Combine the milk and sugar and

heat to the boiling point. Place in a a double boiler, add the well beaten egg yolks, nutmeg and salt. Stir constantly. Add the wine slowly and the gelatin that has been soak-, ed. Cook this mixture in the double boiler until it coats a spoon. Cool slightly and fold in the stiffly beaten egg whites. Let cool until firm and blend with the whipped cream. If you wish to add an attractive touch to the color of the pie, divide the filling in two parts and add a* few drops of red coloring to one half Make the first layer in a baked pie shell of the plain cream filling, on top the tinted layer. Cover with sweetened whipped cream and chill again before serving. This idea may be used in either individual pies as well as the large family size.

Automobiles From the U.S.A. Manufacturers or American automobiles are educating the Europeans to believe the well-known fact that the best kind of cars are produced by the “Yankees.” At present the narrow lanes and crooked roads on the British Isles and on the Continent are being replaced by the long and straight highways of the American type. This has aroused interest in the extraordinary performance secured by American cars using aluminum cylinder

chambers such as haye been adopted within the last two or three years since the Bohn Aluminum and Brass Corporation convinced American manufacturers and the public that they held the key to longer life of cars and better performance through engine design. That company sent their cheif engineer, David E. Anderson, on a three months tour of investigation of the European situation. He found a warm welcome among the European engineers, including those in Italy and Germany where the American style of engine has proven its ability to stand up and thrive under continuous operation and at a high speed.
