Plus what? The answer is — nerve. I’ve known ballplayers without exceptional skill to make their way in major league baseball on the strength of an iron courage. I’ve seen ballplayers, possessing unusual skill and ability, quickly pass “clown the river” because they lacked mental stamina. On a show-down, then, I’d say that nerve is the most important asset a ballplayer can have—he can mud$Ue through with the one and without the other; hut ability alone won't carry him in the majors any longer than it takes for a more courageous player to apply for the

job.

In particular, I’m thinking of Charles Fred Lucas, ace of the Cincinnati Reds’ mound staff and rated among the five mbst effective twirlers in the senior circuit. The others are Lon Warneke, Chicago; Betts of the Braves; Hub-

bell of the Giants; and Steve Swe-’^u^ be taking tickets at the gate, tonic, Pittsburgh. Maybe you know the lad wins ball games just Lucas as “Red,” the fiery right-:^be same and the reason for it is hander who doesn’t care a cancel-' sim p le _ t h e Lucas formula includes

Lucas has Red-Head. He works on the old nerve and a {ag t ha#, he hllows theory that the harder they swing fewer runs, fewer walks,' pitches the cooler the resulting breeze on more complete games. What’s the a hot, summer day! (connection? Well, there is a “Let iWhen I say that Red Lucas is - Em Hit It » sc hool of pitching in my selection as the nerviest and t b e majors that operates on the smartest pitcher in the National principle that fielders are paid to League, I know that I am cutting ca t c h batted balls. Red Lucas at myself in for one grand slam—and teiK i s the school religiously. He I don’t mean the contract bridge puts the ball over the plate. The kind, either. I’m thinking of what batter either hits or is called out Lucas would have surely accomp- 0 n strikes. If he hits, the odds lished during the past seven years are plenty in favor of the fielders

with the Cincinnati Reds had the team been a winning one. Since 1926, the team has finished second once, fifth twice, seventh twice and eighth twice for a sevenyear average of .430. Lucas’ own average for-that period is .539. He has never turned in less than 13 victories per season. His earned run average last year, for instance,

making the put out. Lucas figures the odds and that is why his pitching is never fancy—he passes few hatters because a walk is always as good as a hit and sometimes better. It’s a free ride and frequently it’s the pitcher who subsequently is taken for the ride. So Lucas shoots his fast ball into the hatter. The fans gasp, close

"[FULFILLING the demands of the modern b X 1 housewife for compactness and for space and energy conservation, the New Marion Electric Range saves countless steps, with its cool table top. This additional working surface is a nal table top with a solid working foundation and is fully protected from heat by insulation. Besides the automatic control of four impor tant features . . . the oven, surface unit, warming, closet, and convenience outlet . . . there are- several other unique developments on the New Marion Range, whose possibilities can only be realized by use. One of these conveniences is the combined warming closet and fireless cooker com-

partment. Sliding shelves make it unnecessary to reach into a hot oven and are another joy that only time and experience will fully reveal. And no one has to be reminded that a smokeless broiler pan, alone, makes the new range worth while. Modern in looks, in unique conveniences, and in price, the NEW MARION ELECTRIC RANGE incorporates all recent developments in the art of electric cookery and is as superior to the electric range of the early days as a 1933 automobile is to the original “horseless carriage.” Come in and See this NEW electric range that is the last word m speed, in efficiency, and in perfection of results . . . all automatically controlled, if you choose.
