OPERATORS IN AUTO ACCIDENTS

Average for All Drivers In 1931 Was 4.78 Per Cent “NEW DRIVERS” HAVE BAD RECORD Over-confidence Consitutes Major Reason for Large Number

* The data presented in the above chart include more than 5,000,000 drivers in states which license operators on the basis of examinations. The accident experience of thte drivers has been related to the number of operators licensed by the various periods enumerated. It shows that during a year 9 per cent of the drivers with less than three months of operation were involved in personal injury accidents, while 1.91 per cent of the operators with three but less than six months of driving were involved in accidents. The experience discloses that 2.1 per cent of the operators with six months but less than a year of driving were involved in accidents, and 4.99 per cent of the operators with a year or more of driving were involved in accidents. Taking all drivers, 4.78 per cent of them were involved in personal injury accidents- The average accident experience for drivers with less than a year of operation was 2.72 per cent. It will be seen that drivers with less than a year of operation had a better accident experience than the average of all

drivers.

Lack of Knowledge

The relatively had accident record of “new drivers’’ no doubt is due to their inexperience in handling a car and their lack of knowledge as to the proper driving practices. The improvement in the accident records of drivers with three months but less than six mbnths of operation and with six months but less than a year indicates that as time passes drivers generally acquire a greater degree of experience and knowledge of driving than is usually gained during the first “four lessons’’ The additional experience and knowledge may be gained, however, at

a calamitous price.

It is not unlikely that over-con-fidence constitutes the major reason why the accident experience is so high among the very drivers whose records ordinaarily should be the best from the standpoint of

frequency of accidents. Weather Conditions

Since the data which have been available on this states pertain only to drivers in state requiring persons to undergo an examination before being permitted to have the * privilege to drive, it is logical to

Lights and the Road The dangers which under present insufficient illumination make night driving so hazardous become apparent when it is noted that 39 per cent'of the accidents which occurred in 1931 either at dusk or at night resulted in 48 per cent of the deaths. Road surfaces encountered by motorists . involved in accidents in 1931 were dry in more than 81 per cent of the mishaps that occurred, and in nearly 84 per cent of the accidents in which persons suffered fatal injuries. wrinTlescan BE CONQUERED Proper Treatment Heins Erase Old Lines — Woman’s Dread

By Lady Esther, Noted Beaty Lecturer One thing above all others that a woman always looks for and dreads to find is wrinkles. The discovery 'of the first faint traces of lines causes a sinking of the heart much deper than at the discovery of the first gray hair. To most women, the coming of wrinkles is accepted as the first sign of

age.

Instead of succumbing to the hysteria, the sensible woman does something about it, knowing that it is entirely possible, the general condition of her health being sound to iron out. the first traces and to discourage fruther development of

wrinkles.

Eyes Most Susceptible The first wrinkles almost, invariably appear around the eyes, under the lower lid and away from the outer corners, the latter farming the familiar “crow’s feet”. The area around the eyes is most susceptible to wrinkles because the skin is necessarily somewhat loose and it lacks the underlayers of tissue that serve to “pad”, out other

areas of the face.

As the first step in her efforts to restore her skin to its youthful beauty and texture, she concentrates on the area around the eyes. A soft, light cream, applied generously and patted in thoroughly is the best remedy to apply- The

being relegated to the limbo of other worn-out theories, according to the Holland Institute of Thermology of Holland, Michigan, for science has again come to the rescue of the house-wife and now presents her with the services of home air-con-ditioning systems that effectively rid the home air of practically all dust, lint and other impurities. ' During winter when millions of fires are constantly belching smoke, soot and fine dust particles into the air, and when the home air is minus moisture to that point where it is almost super-dry, the house-wife heretofore nas been confronted with the chore of frequent dusting and mopping in order to maintain cleanliness within the home. In homes heated with old style heating systems the task of keeping the house clean is an endless one for these systems merely serve to heat the

home.

But science has supplanted home heating with home air-conditioning and in doing so has liberated the house-wife from a large part of the

As a result, house-wives find th in the summer, as well as in i winter, their homes are remarkai free from dust. YOUR TEETH

GOOD FOOD MAKES GOOD TEETH

■SHORT AGAIN

When a baby smiles and shows a tiny set of perfect teeth, you see passing in review a bit of pleasant dental history. That history began long before the child was born. Dr. Percy R. ttowe, Director of the Forsyth Dental Infirmary in Boston and a national authority on the influence of diet on good teeth, states that the crowns of temporary teeth begin to calcify—become stony by the deposit of lime salts—about five months before a child is born. They are quite fully formed at birth, although they seldom, of course, have come through the gums. Even the crowns of permanent teeth begin to calcify about a month before birth. Dr. Howe tells us, and they continue to form until they are ready to make their appearance in the mouth, when the child is about six years old. “During the period before birth when the teeth are calcifying, and until late infancy,” Dr. Howe reports, “the teeth are dependent exclusively on nutrition.” If a baby’s smile is to show a tiny set of perfect teeth, he must be fed properly, and his mother must eat the proper foods before the child is born. Physicians, rather than dentists, Ssually advise the mother on mat

ters of diet." But, as in the case of diet for growing chidnen, wholesome food, wisely chosen, is all that is needed. Plenty of milk, fresh vegetables, fruits in ahund 1 - ance — these not only assure health to the mothqr and the expected child, but also prepare the way for a healthy set of teeth in the child's mouth. A mother can ih this way be the child’s best dentist. And she can save future dental troubles and j dental bills by careful dieting. Dental and dietary authorities tell us that if babies and children are fed properly, and are taught to keep their teeth clean, dental troubles will b6 reduced to a minimum. Dr. Martin Dewey, President of the American Dental Association, goes farther when he adds: “If we Americans fed our children the proper diet, saw that they mastered the elements of mouth hygiene, kept their teeth clean and got plenty of sunshine, a few generations would see tooth decay the exception rather than the rule.” Good food and good teeth work hand in hand to give our children good health.
