Composite photographs were not uncommon even In the “Way back when— M days. Here is a celebrated one of George Washington and Abra* ham Lincoln that is doubly composite. Having no full-length portrait of Lincoln available, the photographer merged Lincoln's head with John C. Calhoun's body. This composite was then merged with the famous Wash. Ington portrait and the resulting picture—an obvious fake, since Lincoln was not born till ten years after Washington died—was widely sold under the title, “The Father, and Savior of Our Country."
FORT WAYNE, IND.—Research Into the life of Abraham Lincoln haa definitely established that George Washington was the foremost of Lincoln’s heroes, according to Dr. Louis A. Warren, director of Lincoln Historical Research
Foundation.
“The story of Lincoln’s boyhood Interest In ‘Weems’ Life of Washington’ is well known,” Doctor Warren pointed out in a statement made public here, “but It has only recently been established how enduring those boyhood impressions turned
<mt to be.
“It Is difficult to exaggerate the Influence which Washington exerted iover the man who was destined to ba elevated to an equal place in/ the hearts pf the American people. Certainly, young Lincoln must have been impressed when he read these Words in Weems’ biography of Washington! ^ - —-
“‘Young reader! Go thy way; think of Washington; and HOPE. Though humble thy birth, low thy fortune, and few thy friends, still think of Washington and HOPE.’ “But the clinching evidence ol Lincoln’s great admiration for Washington comes in the tribute ha delivered when he was a 33-year-old country lawyer, a tribute which was lost for many years and finally discovered in the worn pages of a country newspaper. Lincoln said: *“We are met to celebrate this day. Washington is the mightiest name on earth—long since the mightiest in the cause of civil liberty; still mightiest in moral reformation. On that name a eulogy Is expected. It cannot be. To add brightness to the sun or glory to the name of Washington Is alike impossible. Let none attempt it In solemn awe pronounce the name and ir its naked, deathless splendor leav<
It shining on.’ ”
The new George Washington quarter dollar, to be issued by the United States treasury as a feature of' the nation-wide George ’Washington Bicentennial celebration, will be coined in large enough quantities to satisfy a normal demand, ofifcials of the treasury have informed the United States George Washington Bicentennial commission.- It is (expected that the quarter will be ready for distribution before June 1. The design of the new coin was approved by Secreetar y of the Treasury Ogden L. Mills from more than a hundred models, many of them submitted by leading American artists. It was executed by John Flanagan, New York sculptor and the designer of the department of agriculture World War memorial. To obverse of the new coin bears the portrait of George Washington in profile. Over the head appears the word “Liberty,” and below it is stamped the date “1932.” To one side is the motto “In God We Trust.” The principal design of the other side is a spread eagle with the inscription “United States of America” and “E Pluribus Unum” above and “Quarter Dollar” below. An olive branch also appears below the eagle to complete a stately, dignified design. The new coin is exactly the same size, weight and fineness as the present quarter dollar. The George Washington quarter is the first coin or regular issue ever to bear the image of the first president. It was authorized by special act. of congress making it possible for the treasury to share in the Bicentennial celebration. As a coin of regular issue the George Washington quarter will replace the twenty-five cent piece now in circulation. No other quarter dollar will be coined for the next 2& years unless authorized by special act of congress. Minted at San Francisco, Denver and Philadelphia the coins will be placed in circulation through the regular channels of the federal reserve banks, and will appear simultaneously in all parts of the country.
