Muncie, Indiana, Friday, January 30, 1931.

If, as Plug Walburn intimates, he bought up the present police department even before its appointment, he should bring another suit for alienation of affections.

It may be that the courageous Gen. Smedley Butler spoke out of turn, but America bows its head in shame at the apology to Mussolini even before America learned whether or not the general spoke the truth. Or, was it a tacit acknowledgement that the truth is no defense when a superior being is assailed. If we are to become a nation of bootlickers let’s acknowledge it instead of boasting of our percentage of Americanism.

Another one of Chief Mann’s supreme court decisions has been reversed, in his own court this time. He may learn sometime.

One of the Vanderbilts said he was with Mussolini when he ran over the child. It’s now up to some other billionaire to apologize for Vaivderbilt. MAYOR DALE'SRULE76USED

Continued from Page 1 tainly render the old system and methods in danger of becoming obsolete. CITES PROPAGANDA CAMPAIGN Continuing his opposition to action by Mishawaka in establishing a a sew 7 age disposal plant, Mayor Petro said: “The attention of the council is directed to the persistent, organized effort to force upon us without delay this proposed installation of expensive equipment and methods of river sanitation. “It is now proposed to force the city of Mishawaka to succumb to the demand of those who have long been conducting a campaign of propaganda favorable to the big contractors, high-priced engineering firms and bond-floating agencies that swarm'and trail the pathway and wreckage of these municipal projects, whose shibboleth is ‘Progess’ and wdiose hue and cry is the seductive call of the public to lives of sportsmanship and happy fishing holes, in which to swim.”

Grocers Charged With Profiteering

Evansville, Ind., Jan. —(UP) Henry Smith, Negro, father of three children, charged that Evansville grocers patronized by persons receiving aid from the township poor relief fund are profiteering. The matter is being considered by the Vanderburg county commissioners. According to Smith, he received a $4 grocery order from Trustee Robert Riely and a grocer charged 40 cents for two small heads of cabbage which the buyer says were not worth more than 15 cents, and 25 cents for a bucket of lard Worth 10 or 15 cents. The commissioners and' trustees assert that if the profiteering charge substantiated, evidence will be placed before a grand jury. • o 1 Raze Resort

Laporte, Ind.. Jan. 29.—(UP) — Maple City, once reputed to be northern Indiana’s most notorious gambling house, is being razed. The building, at least 65 years old, was originally a school but later became a combined saloongambling house. Poker games, held there, frequently lasted over a week at a time and cots were available to permit gamblers to rest while playing, it was said . 0 HOME BUILDING DESIGNS ARE ON EXHIBITION

Indianapolis, Jan. 29.—(UP) — Latest home building styles were shown at the annual exhibition of the Indiana Society of Architects which opened at the John Herron Art Institute here today. * A display of pigtures included those of several of the finest Indiana residences. Awards for the year will be presented at a banquet tonight. ■ o —— HANDCUFFS ARE AUTHORIZED

Rivoli Theater

STORY UNDERLIES COMEDY SITUATIONS OF “REDUCING” In “Reducing” the new Marie Dressler-Polly Moran Metro-Gold-wyn-Mayer comedy, which will open Sunday at the Rivoli Theater in Muncie for three days, there is no delay to the start of the fun. It begins with the departure of Marie Dressier, her postman-hus-band, Lucien Littlefield; her daughter, Anita Page, and her two sons, for a visit with her sister, Polly Moran, wealthy New York beauty parlor proprietress. The laughs start with adventures at a station ticket office, and then in a Pullman, where Marie has engaged one upper for both herself and Anita. The guffaws continue when the group arrive in New York. Mischief on the part of the boys in the Grand Central Station starts a wave of laughs which washes them all right into Polly’s apartment. Grins galore are reserved for the next sequence, laid in the beauty parlors, where Marie becomes' Polly’s assistant, and Anita the cashier. All comedies must have a plot to pull the laughs together, and in “Reducing” '(he plot concerns the tangled love affairs of Anita Page and her New York cousin, Sally Ellers. The men in the case are Willidm “Buster” Collier, Jr., clever son of a clever father, and the capable William Bakewell, direct from his successes in “Paid” and “All Quiet on the Western Eront.” “Reducing” was filmed by “Chuck” Reisner, who directed Miss Dressier and Miss Moran in their previous great hit, “Caught Short.” APPOINTMENT a — (Continued From Page One) and again with the support of Mr. Hoover hafi submitted an appeal for a $10,000,000 relief fund. Mr. Hoo ver in a letter to him approves the idea, saying: ‘The problem, as now developed requires more than the available funds.’ “Now no one supposes that the problem could have developed so radicallly in five days. The only conclusion is that these leaders had no conception of the. true .gravity of the situation, and that they don’t really know yet what they want or need. Last week it was four millions; this week it is ten millions. And evpn if they get the money the country will give it without confidence and with more than a vague suspicion that even such an amount won’t turn the trick so long as we have such leadership.”

name . P. Rogers, of Greenville, ing for sympathy. He signs his Route No. 2. In a letter to the ditor of the Dallas News, and published in that paper, he writes: “I am one among many farmers who were hard hit last year. Beginning early and working hard to make a big crop, .1 came out at the Aid of the season with three bales )f cotton, which were turned over to my merchant for supplies furnished. “My two horses and three cows were mortgaged to the hank.to secure an old debt and the bank now >wns them. “On the first Tuesday in December the loan company foreclosed a lien it held against my farm and it now owns the farm. “Truly 1 have been hit hard, but 1 deserve no sympathy; I voted for Hoover.”

Covington, Ind., Jan. 29.—(UP) — Special expenditure of $500 to cm ploy additional counsel for prosecution of cases in Fountain county and $100 to buy handcuffs has been authorized by the county council in.its program of law enforcement.
