Old Geography Praises Indiana
Mpnticello, Ind., Feb. j.— (UP) — A geography, printed in 1804, has been found in the library of Mrs. and Mr. Gene Reth by their daughter, Mrs. Genevieve Shaw. The book praises Indiana for its resources and location, saying in part: “No part of the Federal territory unites so many advantages in point of health, fertility, variety of production and foreign intercourse.” Praising Indiana further, the book also contained the following paragraph: “Both the high and low lands produce vast quantities of natural grapes, from which the settlers universally make a sufficiency Cor their own consumption of rich red wine, it is asserted that age makes this wine preferable to most of the European wines.” o Heavy Loads Will Be Closely Checked
ludignapoiis, Feb. ■ —(UP)— Field representatives of the state highway department today were notified to observe closely the loads carried by trucks and busses during this season, in a move to prevent damage to Indiana roads during thaws. During the spring of the year, when roads are thawing and becoming soft, heavy loads may cause thousands of dohars damage which often necessitates closing of the thoroughfare while repairs are being made, the notice said. It is the duty of the field workers to prevent trucks and busses carrying excess loads from using these roads. All roads will be posted as soon as they are too soft for other than normal or light traffic, officials of the department said.
