William Haines, exponent of wise-cracaing roies, mixes whims .cal numor wim a deeper noie of urama in his deout in his lirst alltalking picture, "iNavy Blues" which w ill be seen and heard on the perfect talking screen at the Rivoli Theatre, three da:s starting with the matinee Sunday. names is comical as ever in his role of a gob aboard a destroyer, but he tempers his comedy with a bit of serious acting in which he makes of his love arrair a tensely dramatic thing. Clarence Brown’s direction has injected many deft human touches mto the star’s adventure at sea, and the result is entertainment that gives one a new idea of the versatility of the star. “Navy Blues” is the story of a sailor and his sweetheart, a mis unuei standing and a reconciliation, mingled with adventures aboard ship, tne comical side of navy hie, anu a deal of wholesome fun. Anita Page is charming as the heroine, and her scenes with Haines at the i. vV. C. A. social, where they meet, are hilariously funny.. Big, good-natured Karl Dane as ••’Sven,” Haines’ buddy aboard ship and aid in the big fight scene, has a character role that fits him to perfection. J. C. Nugent and Edythe Ghapman as the father and mother of the heroine have also well-played roles. Wade Boteler is convincing as the tough chief petty officer, and Harry Woods as the lieutenant. Dane and Gertrude Sutton, playing his Swedish sweetheart, provide the main comedy characterizations. Much of the picture was filmed at sea on a destroyer, affording a number of glimpses of life as it is lived by Uncie Sam’s sailors. The regular daily routine is shown from the moment when the ships bell rouses the men from their berths in the fo’castle, on through the amusing details of the .morning toilet on deck, breakfast, ship’s duties and leisure hours. The cooperation of the U. S. Navy Department, assisted Director Clarence Brown in adhering faithfully to actual navy conditions. William Haines as a hard-boiled gob gives a side-splitting impersonation that will be remembered by his audiences for a long, long

while.
