Too Much Territory For Lon Speaking of the demand made by the Star for an investigation of the letting of the contract for the sewer engineering job, Councilman Friedley says he is in favor of it if the council will not only investigate the sewer job but other transactions of the board for the past three years. The Post-Democrat is rather inclined to believe that Lon Thornburg, who quit in holy horror, would rather object to such an all-inclusive probe.

Let’s Coax Him Ex-Senator Jim Fitch, in an interview with the Press Wednesday, professed to be somewhat in doubt as to whether or not he wanted that board of works job. Even Democrats sometimes refuse to accepted appointive jobs said Jim. * Why bless his little heart, let’s coax him and see if we can get him to take.it. Aw, come on Jim, be a sport and sacrifice yourself and make the fellow look small who said the only reason you were open for the job was that there had been no vacancy in the office of justice of the peace. Resignations seems to be in order in Muncie, Let the good work goon. We can stand plenty more of it.

Being prominent in the Unity Republican Club, and threatening to be a candidate for mayor, it was but natural that Jim Fitch should have been selected by Hampton. By one stroke he put the Indian sign on two aspirants for his job.

When Thornburg quit, Fitch ws appointed. There are other lame ducks to be takeh care of. Hampton should take his orders from the Star, fire Cranor and Retz and give the jobs to Clarence Dearth and Jake Cavanaugh.

Judicial Appointments.

The announcement is made that Judge Dearth will attempt to make no appointments of boards or individuals for the various posts within the gift of the cou,rt, but will give Judge-Elect Guthrie a free Hand and will not embarrass him by loading him up with left-overs of the Dearth regime. Nov/ that is very nice of the judge. It shows the proper spirit. This week he began his cleaning up shower by accepting the resignations of all members of the board of

children’s guardians.

Mr. Guthrie will no doubt name high class men and women to these various positions. It is well that the old regime at the orphans’ home is ended. There have been grave charges of extravagant expenditures and irregulari-

ties in the purchase of supplies.

No member of the board who was appointed by Dearth should be renamed by Mr. Guthrie and the reappointment of Mrs. Sutton as matron woul dbe adistinct disappointment to those who will be satisfied by nothing but a clean sweep. It will be recalled that Judge Dearth’s very first act was to remove the board of guardians and the efficient matron, Mrs. Gamble, and the immediate appointment of political

favorites of the Billy Williams machine.

It would also be very satisfactory to the people if Judge Guthrie should decide to do away with the useless job of riding bailiff. This job was created to take care of the present incumbent, Greenwalt, a relative of Billy Williams. Delaware county has about as much need of a ridingbailiff as she does for a one-eyed Bolivian mongoose. But it is to be hoped, above all things, that Judge Dearth will also give Mr. Guthrie a free rein in the matter of the ap-

pointment of jury commissioners.

Under the construction of the law of Indiana judges, Dearth was permitted to hold until January 1. If he had had gone out, as his predecessor did, ten days after the election, Guthrie would have named the jury commissioners, but as the law provides that they must be named before the first of January, they will be appointed by Dearth. If Judge Dearth is sincere in his statement that he expects to give his successor a free rein, he will appoint}| jury commiesionc. s on the recommendation of Guthrie. If he does this he will prove that he means what he says.

When thieves fall out, they generally lighi their heads.

There will be no town meeting held for the purpose of begging Lon Thornburg to reconsider. In the

words of Muncie’s eminent novelist, Mr. Scoggins, /Not so, Bolivia!”

The Star is demanding the removal of Board of Works members Retz and Cranor. Something like the fellow who bet a dollar he could drink a gallon of dishwater. Got three quarts of it down and threw up (that is the bet) when he saw a hair floating in the slop. The Star has swallowed three years of unutterable rottenness on the part of the board of works, the paragon Thornburg included, before

it rises to remonstrate.
