Along the Rail Highway Deep rivers and wide valleys are no longer barriers in the onrush sweep of the heavy train. They have been spamled by mighty bridges and trestles—great steel and concrete structures which bear their millions-of-ton loads in perfect safety. Marvels of engineering feat, these connecting links between shore and shore and crest and crest cut down distance and join sections together which nature had divided. Along the lines of the Chesapeake and Ohio are some splendid examples of modern bridge construction. Into this work there is absolute exactness of estimate as to load, weight and stress. Foundations are buried deep in the rock and the strong steel spans carry the tracks over which fast passenger trains and long, steady-moving freights push their way in the transportation service of America. Millions of dollars are invested annually by the railroads in the erection of safe structures which shorten travel and expedite movement. It is another form ^of expenditure by which the carriers are seeking to meet their opportunity in rendering a safe and dependable and speedy service for the producers and consumers of this country. The Chesapeake and Ohio points with pride to this form of betterments along its far-reaching lines 'of track. The cost has been heavy, but the results in improvement and eiliciency of service have more than justified the outlay, W. T. Haraiian, President.
