FLOOD DAMAGE- - MAY BE MILLION
Six Deaths Caused By High Waters In Five South-
ern States.
Memphis, Tenn., Dec. 28.—Six deaths and property damage running into the hundred thousands was estimated last night from flood waters that spread over lowlands in Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama. The flood began to recede in most of the inundated area, but its crest was in sight at other points. Forecast of further rains in the flooded area, however, caused apprehension and additional safeguards to protect life and property were taken. The heaviest property damage was in eastern Kentucky and Tennesse where small streams became raging # torrents and spread out over the lowlands. More than 2,000 people in Nashville were routed from their homes when the Cumberland inundated 50 j blocks of the city. The weather bureau there forecast a stage of 52 to 53 feet before the flood reach-! es its crest. The Cumberland will probably continue to rise until Wednesday or Thursday and is higher tonight than at any time since 1882. Tennessee’ bore the brunt of the flood, many small streams spreading out over lowlands covering highways and caused an estimated damage of $50,000 to roads in the state. The Tennessee river Las begun falling.
