Canada Maintains Business Activity
Ottawa, Ontario.—Stimulated by the profitable marketing of the excellent crops Of 1925 and by the prosperous conditions in the United States during recent months, business activity in Canada was maintained at a high level during the first half of 1926. Construction was especially active from April to June, the contracts awarded in May reaching a record for all time. Revenue car loadings were also greater in the second quarter, when allowance is made for seasonal variation. The primary iron and steel industry operated at a comparatively high level of activity with orders from the railways and construction industry. Industrial employment showed significant improvement during the first half of the year, attaining on June 1 and July 1 a higher level than on the correspodnig dates of any on the corresponding dates of any

(Continued from Page One) correction was being made. There are threats now of busi-
ness reprisals, of more libel suits, and even of assassination to bring a stop to clean-up proceedings in Canton; but there is pledge, too, of Prosecuting Attorney McClinstock, of further grand jury investigation, and District Attorney Bernsteen has promised to press his conspiracy prosecution^ despite the fact that aid sought from Washington has not been forth-
coming.
And if these men, under handicap, can carry on, the press cannot do otherwise; it must support
them, boycott. o

of $1,250,000, it er than the champion but it looked inventory ap- doubtful if he had enough Jo stop
the champion. Dempsey
-Dempsey came out
corner and feinted Tunney
into a neutral corner. Dempsey knocked Tunney against the ropes twice with lefts and rights. Dempsey was grunting with every punch and fighting like a madman. Tunney protested to the referee about Dempsey’s rough work in the clinches. Dempsey seemed again to tire and Tunney started forcing. The champion breathed with great difficulty and was obviously tired. Dempsey jumped at Tunney and rocked him with two lefts to the body. Tunney made Dempsey step back with a rifle fire of short lefts and hurt the champion with a left to the chin. There seemed to be no steam in the punches of either. They were sparring when the

MORGAN BOOMED FOR U.S. MARSHAL
Former Prohibition Director Is Mentioned To Succeed Linus P. Meredith.
Indianapolis, Sept. 22.—Taking advantage of the breach between President Coolidge and the two senators from Indiana, a group of Indiana citizens is preparing to present the name of Bert M. Morgen, former prohibition director for Indiana, to the President as a successor to Linus P. Meredith, United States marshal for Indiana, when his term expires October 1. It is the hope of the committee that a plan may be worked out by which Morgan can be named, similar to the one used in Chicago where E. J. Fogarty, former warden of the Indiana state prison, was named as Cook county jailer on a merit basis in order to hdflp cleanup what has been termed Indiana’s “rotten politics.” That there may be some hesitancy on the part of President Coolidge to approve the selectidn of Alf. O. Meloy, candidate of the Coffin-Robinson-Trotter coterie as the next marshal for Indiana, is causing Morgan’s friends to become active. Morgan was removed as prohibition director on the demand of Senator James E. Watson after he had made a good record in the office. To his personal friends Meredith has indicated that he is placing his official house in order and that he is preparing to turn his office over to the choice of the Coffin organization.
Of the hundreds of questions asked by farmers at the Purdue weed exhibit during the recent State Fair the accomparrying five were asked most frequently. The answers were supplied by A. A. Hanson weed specialist of the Purdue Agricultural Extension staff. (1.) Does Canada thistle seed in Indiana? Germination studies conducted by Purdue indicate that in the northern third of Indiana live
son, in the middle third, the formation of live seeds is dependent on weather conditions and they do not form every year, while in the southern third of the state live seeds have never been found. (2.) What is the best way to destroy a field of Canada thistle? Recent demonstrations throughout Indiana have shown that a good stand of alfalfa will practfcally destroy Canada thistle in three years. It is necessary, however, to first weaken the thistles by fall plowing and thorough seed bed preparation and a hardy variety of alfalfa, such as Grimm or Ontario variegated, must be used to avoid as much as possible the danger of weakening the stand by winter
killing.
(3.) How can a field of wild morning glory be destroyed? When the land is plowed for corn, turn in hogs. Morning glory roots possess a flavor very similar to that of sweet potatoes and hogs eat the roots with relish. Rings, of course, must be taken out of the animals noses. Several farmers have reported that over 90 per cent of the weed was destroyed during the first season that this method was
tried.
(4.) What is the best treatment for small patches of wild garlic? Saturate the tops of the plants with a heavy oil such as crude oil or waste crank case oil about April 15. After the first of May, oil is no longer effective against garlic. (5.) How can a field of wild garlic be cleaned of the pest? Fall plow about November 15 or later in such a manner as to bury the garlic tops and expose the bulbs, allow the land to remain rough over winter, plow or double disc in the spring and plant corn or soybeans or cowpeas in rows. Repeat two more years, then use pure seed wheat.
Senator James E. Watson, candidate for re-election, in addressing a Republican meeting at Linton, Indiana, declared that no government has expended such large sums for pensions for war heroes as has the United States.
Chester O. Bittner, 815 Dorman St., Indianapolis, was wakened in the night to find a colored bur.glar in his bedroom. Bittner fired three shots and the intruder left.

DEFEAT JUDGE TRAVIS
(Continued from Page One) punish without the constitutional “due process of law” which protects other alleged transgressors against the law, and by a further pronouncement in the same written opinion that the aggrieved judge has the sole power to interpret the meaning and intent of the words written or spoken. Thus, if we are to accept Justice Travis’ mediaeval construction of the rights of the press and of individuals to truthfully discuss the actions of judges, the judge who becomes a candidate for re-election may summarily dispose of those who dare to oppose his candidacy, either on the stump or by newspaper criticism, by sending his critics to the penal farm. The judge who denies to the individual the right to express truthful criticism against himself or any other judge, has considerable nerve to go out over the state asking the individuals for whom he must have such a great contempt to vote for him. We trust that the voters of Indiana will not be so lacking in self respect that they will fail to defeat Justice Travis in November.
