Girls Having Hard Times In Florida

Tampa, Fla., Feb. • 1.—Thousands of unmarried girls from all parts of the country have responded to the lure of the Florida boom, but not all are finding the task of “working their way” through a winter’s vacation as easy as- they had expected. Nearly one thousand Northern girls, attracted by a winter in Florida, are in Tampa alone, Miss Eva Mae Bowman, general secretary of the Y. M. C. A., estimated today. The influx, she pointed out, has lowered the salaries and forced many a high-priced stenographer to the task of serving hash and beans or the more exciting work of “bird dodging” for real estate concerns. Troops Sent To Kentucky Trial

Lexington, Ky., Feb. 1.—Behind closed doors and with utmost secrecy regarding their plans, officials concerned with preventing mob violence during the trial of Ed Harris, Negro, who has confessed slaying three persons and attacking a white woman, met here yesterday. The trial begins Tuesday. Troops of the Kentucky national guard, said to number 1,000, have been ordered here to patrol the city and maintain order. The Negro will be brought here today, from the state reformatory at Frankfort, where he was rushed after his capture at Georgetown.

Two problems our pioneer women didn’t have were cigarette stains on their fingers and chapped knees. None is so blind as the masculine person who fails to notice women’s fashions—if there is such an animal. Keeping the mouth shut at the proper time has saved the skins of innumerable fish and cornet players. An explosion occurred in the Mossboro coaj mine, twenty-fiv|» miles from Birmingham, Ala., late Friday evening. Thirty men are reported to have been killed. Early Sunday morning, yeggs entered the store of Cramer and Norton at Danville, 111., and blew open the safe from which they secured about $3,000. In muffling the blowing of the safe they used bolt goods and blankets piled against the safe. These caught fire from the explosion which resulted in the burning of the building with an estimated loss of about $90,000 and it is thought that two- firemen received fatal injuries*
