Ocean Creature Big as a Small Warship The largest creature known, living or extinct, is the sulphur bottomed whale, which reaches a length of 90 feet. Its weight has not been determined, but a torpedo boat of the some length and of the same underwater contour would displace 32 tons. All whales are carnivorous, but all the fishes—cuttle-fish and smaller creatures—upon which they feed are dependent ultimately upon plant life for their existence. How much vegetable material does it take .to support a whale? If the approximate thirty tons represented by a very large whale were incorporated into the bodies of cattle, the latter would require for their support each day the amount of fats and carbo-hydrates present in the hay yielded by an acre of good meadow land in a whole season’s growth.
Helpful Habit A Chicago newspaper writer went out to investigate Hollywood. She was greatly surprised when she discovered how many of the picture people were happily married, had children in the public schools, and were active in building up the community. “I always thought,” she confided, “that marriage was supposed to interfere with art, but this does not seem to be the case at all.” “It doesn’t interefere at all,” replied a Los Angeles writer, “if you marry often enough.”—Los Angeles Times.

MY FAVORITE STORIES
By IRVIN S. COBB ■H-M-I-i-I-H-I-I-l-I-l-h-I-I-I-H-h-H-h-hh DOOOOOOOOGOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO (Copyright.) The Withdrawal of the Candidate When Miss Annie Oakley, the famous rifle shot, was traveling through the country giving exhibitions of her skill at theaters, she reached a small town in Texas; and her manager inserted an advertisement in the home paper for a smart colored boy to assist in the performance. Applicants were instructed to apply at the stage door of the local opera house at 1 p. m. sharp. When the manager arrived he foukd the passageway congested with little negroes, each eager to testify to Ills smartness. He made a selection, picking out a spry boy of about twelve. He took bis applicant inside and stationed him near the wings. “You will stand right here and not move,” he said. “When the curtain goes up, Miss Oakley will come out and talk to the audience for a few moments. Then 1 will balance a small applj on your forehead and the lady will go over on the other side of the stage yonder and shoot it off.” The candidate grabbed for his hat, his eyes wildly rolling in search of the nearest path to safety. “Mistah,” he demanded, “who’s goiu’ to shoot whut apple offer whose haid? Me, why I wouldn’t let mah own mammy shoot no apple offer mah haid, let alone it’s some stranger!” And he was gone.
The Ways of the Army A green recruit was having his first experience at doing sentry duty at one of the southern cantonments in 1917. Toward him through the darkness came a captain. “Halt! Who goes there?” demanded the greenhorn. “Officer of the day,” came the answ r er. “Beat it bo, before I run you in,” said the sentry. “What the h—1 would the officer of the day be doin’ bangin’ ’round at night?” This story is matched by one that I had from a retired chaplain, who vouched for its authenticity: The officer of the day was inspecting the guard. “What are your orders?” he inquired of a drafted man. “Sir,” said the sentry, in his newly acquired military manner, "my orders are to be vigilant.” “What does vigilant mean?” said the officer. “I don’t know," said the sentry. “Call the corporal of the guard and we’ll find out,” said the officer. The corporal of the guard came, and saluted. “Corporal,” said the officer, “this man here doesn’t know the meaning of the word vigilant. Suppose you tell him.” “It means, sir, to be alert,” answered the corporal promptly. “And what does alert mean?” said the commander, anxious that the lesson should be driven home to the pupil. “I don’t know,” said the corporal.
Out of Business Hours Tto realize what the antiquity of this one Is you first must look up the date of Gen. Tom Thumb’s death and then hark still farther back to the yet more remote period when that little man was at the height of his fame. Under the management of P. T. Barnum, the most famous of all our dwarfs was touring the country. Between engagements he stopped over Sunday at a country hotel in New England. A lady of the neighborhood called and sent up her card with the request that she be permitted to meet the general. The message was received by a member of Barnum’s staff, who happened at the moment to be in the general’s room. This person, who was six feet tall and broad in prbportion and something of a wit, asked that the lady be shown up. Presently she knocked at the door and he answered it. “I am looking,” she said, “for Gen. Tom Thumb.” “Madam,” he said, “proceed to look.” “Surely you are not the celebrated midget?” she cried. “Certainly I am,” he answered. "Bv,t just at the present moment, madam, I happen to be resting.”
1 he Choice of Young Cohen It so befell in the months preceding our entry into the World war that In a suburb of Chicago a preparedness league was organized. Sw’ept away by patriotic love for his adopted country a youth % named Cohen joined it. ' Now, military drill we.s a part of the duties of a member, and young Cohen did not take with any great amount of enthusiasm to this feature. One evening the commander of his squad sought to liven him. "Buck up, Herman!” he said. “You learn how to be a soldier, and some of these days you may go back to the old country—to Poland— and be a field marshal.” “I think,” said Herman, “I’d rather stay here and be a Marshall Field.”

Broken Line and Drapery in Mode
Flaring Skirt Returns and Is Prominent on Autumn Fashion Card. This season promises to be splendid for many women. Not only the perfect 36, but those whose dimensions begin two numbers beyond will be able to reflect the glass of fashion, observes a fashion authority in the New York Times. It is an interesting experience to sit through Parisian presentations of advance models, for In the audience are debutantes, belles and brides, whose gaze is fastened to the sylphlike mannequins gliding and striding through their paces the length of velvety salon floors. The alluring things they wear appear to have been made for their type alone. Every model fits perfectly the slim shoulders, narrow hips and the pouter pigeon walk of the smart girl of today. The terms “bearing” and “carriage,” once so important among elegantes, are as obsolete as elegance. They say that even at its silliest the pouter pigeon walk Is not nearly as absurd as the Grecian bend, the stylish tread of gteat-grandma’s day. Be that as it may, both are gauche and the return to normalcy in these matters is evident with the new clothes for autumn and early winter. The new movement is unanimous, and the broken line, the sinuous bias, subtle drapery and inserted godet have changed utterly accepted style. The revolution has come gradually, but the way of the tube frock was the way of ease, and monotony alone created demand for something. The “acid test” of art appears to have been applied this year to the fashion ateliers of Paris. The older houses that have held for generations a magic in their names are finding this year a challenge hitherto unmet in other couturiers who are establishing
New Bustle Drapery in Evening Gown of Panne, by Mouliere. new Ideals in styles. One most conspicuous among these is Mouliere, long known to the old Faubourg of Paris, who has lately been discovered by the more traveled American and English women of fashion. This designer declares for the conventional, for correct form, and declines the opportunity to become famous by way of the sensational. His things are first of all de-
Durable Leather Flowers Can Be Made at Home Leather flowers, which are very attractive, used as trimming on felt hats or as boutonnieres, can be made at home. They will be more durable, also, as the leather in those purchased ready-made in the shops, is of a cheaper grade. The first step, after having bought a piece of leather, is to decide on the design of the flowers and leaves and cut them out. It has been found a good plan to make a circle with a compass and draw a diameter across it as a guide, then the semi-circles can be divided into as many petals as desired. After the flower has been worked out in the rough, as it were, it is then easy to shape it with a pair of scissors. Moulding the petals comes next. Wet the leather well and run a blunt instrument (a handle of a teaspoon will do) several times down eacli petal from end to end. If this is done from the outside, the petals will be convex, if from the inside, concave. The tips of the petals can be rolled up by the thumb. Leather is very pliable while it is wet and if dried quickly before a strong fire, will generally retain the shape given to it. The leaves are made in the same manner as the petals, veins can be drawn on them with a knitting needle. The assembling of the various parts is the next step in this interesting occupation. The outer petals should be larger in size than the inner ones and decrease in size until the center is reached, one fitting into the other. The center holds the whole flower together and can be made in a number of different ways—a tiny artificial flower, a

signed for the individual, each type a separate and distinct creation. The woman with a preference for a specific type of dress, or who declines to accept the most popular mode, finds an ally in Mouliere. The charm of Mouliere gowns is their simplicity and even balance, most attractively illustrated in those for morning and afternoon. These are designed with much versatility. The flaring skirt is, of course, shown in many of these daytime frocks, the effect being accomplished with a deep circular flounce, the widening line of which begins just below the hips, with one or more bias ruffles or with inserted or applied godet. This model is made with equal success in soft crepes, satins, fine woolens and velvets.

on long-shaped brooches. The pin is quite plain. The lizard or snake is curled around it. As a rule, the ornament is kept on a small scale, and from a distance cannot be distinguished from the pin, around which it has wrapped itself. It is often only the tiny emerald pin-point eyes that attract attention to the animal at all. The same design is used for bracelets—the simple silver hoop being decorated with a silver ornament generally highly conventionalized, the eyes again being the only indication that it is intended to represent an animal. Rings in silver, but beautifully wrought, the workmanship bringing up the price almost to that of a gold ring, are also seen with similar
designs.

bead, small beads in wire circles, a piece of rich brocade or even of the leather wound around a button or bead, a wire thrust through the material used and wound around the petals on the outside completes the flower and without the aid of a needle and thread. The wire used should be very fine. If one desires to vary the flowers or make them more elaborate, the petals can be painted 'or tinted.
Gay Little Shoes The little ones of Paris are shod every bit as elegantly as their mammas. Colored kid is used almost exclusively and the color combinations are similar to those on the footwear for the grown-ups. In these charming little creations white kid is combined with blue or pink. A plaid pattern in red and gray with a cherry-colored strap and collar appears on one shoe, while in the case of another mauve kid Is combined with parraa-violet glace. Many of these shoes are ornamented with delightful little handpainted designs, such as a whito cat on the colored kid tab.
Unusual Sleeves on Jumpers Some of the smartest of the Lanvin two-piece models with jersey top, the jersey usually almost as fine as balbriggan, have an unusual sleeve. Two bands of jersey more tightly knitted than the sleeve itself are inset, one about an inch above the wrist and the other an inch above that. Most of the jumper suits are long-sleeved, but an attractive, very youthful model is sleeveless, the jumper very short, over a sleeveless, round-cellared silk blouse.
