' EDITORIAL NOTES. MR. CARPENTER KNOWS.

In a speech at W^est Baden Wednesday, Mr. Carpenter, of Brazil, president of the Indiana Bankers Association, said it was the duty of the bankers of every community to take an interest in the election of sheriffs and prosecuting attorneys, if they expected the right kind of protection against bank bandits. Mr. Carpenter must have been thinking about Delaware county where bandits of the Chapman and Dutch Anderson type selected as their happy home, right under the nose of Sheriff

Hoffman and Prosecutor Ogle.

Herb Smith, internal revenue collector for this district, spogesman for Hampton drunks in Harry Redkey’s court, and big noise in the Billy Williams machine, owes $123.81 back personal taxes, running back over a period of nineteen years. This amount now stands against him, unpaid, in the county treasurer’s office. Having successfully dodged his own legal taxes for nineteen years, Herb is evidently qualified from the government’s viewpoint to force other people to pay theirs. Herb was in the big Portland “get-together” republican meeting and cheered louder than anybody when Attorney-General Gillion told the cock-eyed world that republicans were more fitted to hold office than democrats, because they stand for a reduction of taxes.

The board of control has recommended that the track and field meet dates for 1926 be as follows: Sectional, May 15; final, May 23. “Sheep Stealing.” Under the caption, “Sheep Stealing,” Mr. Trester says: Bishop Leete is reported as saying recently that ‘sheep stealing’ among preachers is too prevalent and that the practice should cease. A banker of note a little more recently said that the practice of bankers stealing the depositors of other neighboring banks was not ethical and the practice should be discontinued. Physicians say that there are members of their profession who steal patients from their

brothers.

The example set by some preachers, some bankers and some physicians should not be followed in high school athletics. Sheep stealing in In-

rules should be studied and presented schools should use in their athletic to your students, teachers and pat- activities the students properly be-

“The board of control considers it the duty and responsibility of high school principals to prove that all of their players are eligible in every way before they are permitted to participate in any interschool games. ‘Undue Influences’ may be used by school officials, students or outsiders, but the violation and the penalty for using players secured by ‘undue influences’ are the same regardless.’

“Section 1, under the heading of ‘Remuneration,’ is clear and comprehensive enough. The penalty for a violation*of the section is also clear and is imperative on the baord of con-

trol.

“Section 1, under the heading of ‘Enrollment,’ in the constitution, is easy to read and an interpretation is given for an easy understanding. “These rules and the spirit bebond them cover the ground rather thoroughly regarding the importation of players and the changing of schools by players. The board of control is of the opinion that a student who accepts inducements, should be declared ineligible for all future high school athletics, and a school that uses such

It is announced from democratic campaign headquarters that a sub-committee of five has been chosen to assist the chairman and precinct committeemen in selecting members of election hoards in the twenty-four Muncie voting precincts. The personnel of the committee is as follows: Frank Mann, chairman; Herschel Ringo, George Cox, Ben Beardorff and Homer Study. This does not mean that the final power of naming election officials will rest in this committee. Its purpose is to sst in an advisory capacity. Nor does it mean that any other member of the Democratic party in the city of Muncie will be deprived of a voice, if, by a mistake of the chairman, precinct committeemen or the advisory cfimmittee, objectionable persons are tentatively selected to serve on any of the boards. There is no use disputing the fact that there are ‘‘Billy Williams democrats” as well as republicans, in Muncie, and the Hampton organization seeks to slip some of these “ringers” in on a number of the election boards. The Hampton crowd has complete control of the republican city organization. This means that the inspectors and every republican election official will be a tried and true cog in the Billy Williams machine. It is therefore imperative that great care should he taken in the selection of the democratic members. The Hampton crowd will steal the election, the same as they did the primary, if the opportunity is afforded.
