CHURCH CANNOT APPROVE OF KLAN ORGANIZATION
Brethren are flirting with the klan. I What shall be said of a minister who allows a lot of persons he does not know to come into his church during I a public service, hooded and masked, oome forward to his altar, bow in the ! years and a half. - The negro who was struck by Berg testified that Chief/Benbow participated in a. conference with Graves, Berg and himself and that Graves and Berg besought him to testify at the hearing that it was partially “his fault.” Possibly the board of safety had reason to discharge, Berg, but it is apparent that the matter deserves a thorough investigation. The fact that the notorious Bob Grttves took a hand in the deal and sought to officiate in a police squabble ought to make the Board of Safety sit
up and take notice.
Graves but recently participated in a drunken shooting scrape in Franklin Hall. He and his gang of protected outlaws crashed into the dance and opened fire with automatics. One man was killed instantly and others were wounded. The Ku Klux grand jury, presided over by a Ku Klux prosecutor could not decide which particular bullet from the basket full, more or less, that were fired by Graves and his party killed the victim, so no homicide in-
dictment was returned.
Graves was kept in jail a few days, where he was given special quarters and special attention by Sheriff Hoffman, and was then released under a light bond. Although Graves is colored and the police and sheriff are kluxers, Graves has had things his own way here. Those ,who urged the dismissal of Berg from the police forc<? are to be members of the Billy Williams klux-Republi-cap machine,^ of which the colored man Graves is an im-
portant political cog.
It i$ true that Berg is entirely too handy with his club and it is probably just as well that he is relieved from further duty. . There may be some justification in his contention that his numerous affrays were not of his seeking, but the fact remains that several men were rather badly
hurt by the ex^officer.
u The Post-Democrat believes, however, that the board of safety made a mistake in removing him so perfunctorily. Every man is entitled to a full defense and from the fact that the klux-republican machine was demanding his removal, suggests the idea that Berg’s withdrawal from the klan might have had something to do with the
charges against the officer.
i The evidence of the colored man who was beaten, that Bob Graves had tried to “fix” the evidence in a police trial should have been given more consideration by the board and should be made the subject of a special and thorough investigation, for the purpose of discovering the seat of the official conspiracy to protect Graves in his numerous
law breaking ventures.
It is a known fact that Graves is a close political ally of the klux prosecutor, and sheriff, and that political booze parties, attended by these officials, were held in his
gambling joint on a number of occasions.
All efforts to convict Graves in the courts have been unavailing, although evidence of an unimpeachable char-
acter could have been easily secured.
It is known to the police and- other peace officers that Graves opened up a new joint in the “redlight” several days, ago and the board of safety should respond to the
public demand for a show down.
The kluxer administration boasts that it has cleaned out the bootleggers and the gamblers. In one respect it
has made good in that fine: It has cleaned out practically enuren n-om uie very oegmmng ex-i- - all Ot the opposition to klan law violators, giving the lat- eluded secret society members, from i what com P° ses the clan or mob. KLUXER GRATITUDE.
A few days since a representative of the PostDemocrat had occasion to visit at Portland, Bryant, Geneva, New Corydon and the German settlement east of Bryant among those plain, honest and law abiding citizens whose whole aim in life is to live in quiet, peace and harmony with every one and who have never had the serenity of their community disturbed until the Ku Klux Klan reared its head in their midst. As in all other communities where this serpent of hate has gained an entrance it has been getting in its venom of distrust and calumny with an ugly effort to disrupt the friendships that have stood through several generations. One of the people whom our representatives met is Dr. Schenk, of New Corydon, who cussed every Catholic in the community and condemned every one except himself and the Imperial Flivver. The doctor reminds us more of the dog that bites the hand of the person that has fed it than any other renegade we have met since the KKK have Konverted t^he doctor to their way of false thinking, for if this misguided vendor of pills is not a full fledged member of the order of hate he certainly has mast emphatic leanings that way. Anybody who boasts of being a reader of The Fiery Cross and the Menace and is too modest ? ? ? to read The Post-Democrat, either has something wrong with the cross fibers of his upstairs or is an enemy to organized society. We are just telling the good people of this settlement that there are some mighty good doctors in nearby towns who have not sold their birthright for a mere mess of pottage.
