Posters Warn Negroes To Quit Alabama Town

(“The Freeman.”) Tuealoosa, Ala.—Tacke^l to trees along the Hargrove road, about seven miles from Tuscaloosa, for a space of about four miles, officials found several posters signed by “The Great Black Cross,” and warning the negro residents of the section that they must move. The posters contained the figure of a member of the organiation wearing a .fcjgh pointed, round hat, with either a or helmet flare to the rear, riding boots and a belt in •which a dagger is carried. The face is not hooded. “We are worse than the Ku Klux Klan, so look out,’* says the poster Beneath the figure is a declaartion: “We Mean Business, Every Negro Must Move.” During the past week, several hundred Negro residents of the community received word from the organization through the mail, dated April 19, warning them to depart from that section. Sheriff N. K. Kyle is making an investigation. o The Difference. Flat head is quite as bad In politic.' as flat foot is in military life. Not only that, but 80 per cent of the flat foot cases are curable.—Houston Post.

“WE TOLD YOU SO” Of course it is unethical for a newspaper to offer the frequent reminder: “We Told You So,” but would it be out of place here to introduce our old and esteemed friend, Harry E. Hoffman, chairman of Postmaster Billy Williams’ personally conducted Republican organization of Delaware county? Several weeks ago we had the temerity to prophesy that the grand old party of Jim Watson, Ed Jackson and Wizard Hi Evans was kidding when it put out the dope that Fred Reasoner was slated for the chairmanship. We suggested, in diplomatic phrase, as is ever our system, that Fred was merely a stalking boss, pepped up with a touch of “high life” and sent around the track to do an exhibition mile; that in the event the klailiff stamp licker grabbed off enough committeemen, the exhibition boss, properly lathered up and rearin’ to go in the big handicap would be blanketed, blindfolded, and backed into the barn where he would kick the rafters loose while Hoffman, the black horse, would shoot under the wire the real winner. Feller citizens, that very thing was pulled off. When we sprung it in advance denials came from every side, and every republican voter who took a hand in the contest for precinct committeemen, voted with the understanding that Reasoner was to be chairman in the event of the success of the kluckRepublican machine. A little matter of political dishonesty does not trouble the postmaster boss. Obtaining votes under false pretense is the fondest thing he is of. Fred kicked liked a bay steer but Billy owned the committee and Hoffman is chairman. Hoffman, appraising his own popularity, knew better than to go to the front, so Reasoner, a Republican who stood well with the general public, was offered as a bait and then ruthlessly discarded. i The news was broken to Reasoner the night before the new committee met. It took place in Billy Williams’ pre-primary payoff joint, Room 420, Roberts Hotel, and the argument which followed sounded like the famous battle of Bilin’ Water, celebrated in verse and song. Fred may stand for it and the deceived Republican voters may stand for it, but if they do they will stand for anything. The better element of the Republican party here have no use for Harry Hoffman but the big kleagle at the postoffice has to have a chairman who is willing to give him the first count of the campaign jack.
