Says U. S. Climate Is Not Changing
U. S. Weather Bureau Replies to Many Inquiries
Washington, April 26—There is no basis for the belief that this portion of‘the earth is undergoing a general Change in climate, the U. S. Weather Bureau stated, in response to numerous inquiries. The fact that the past two years have been unusually mild in most parts of the United States has inspired the belief that the warm periods are growing longer. Records can be furnished to disprove the contention, the bureau stated. “Periods have occurred in the past and will occur again, when for a few years the weather has seemed or will seeni to be noticeably warmer or colder than the average.” the bureau .said. “While there are well recognized alterations in climatic conditions, as of wet and dry, hot and cold, etc. little is known with regard to definite, laws of sequence of weather conditions over extended periods of years. Within ordinary historic times there is practically no evidence that there has been a definite and progressive change in the climate in one direction or the other, but rather -that the same sort of alterations are now succeeding each other indefinitely as in earlier historic times. “It is-also believed that the amount of change, if any, is too small and the extent of the territory involved too indefinite to be of economic interest. Until definite knowledge is available concerning the law of weather conditions and possible periodic cycles affecting the weather are quantitatively established, scientific, long-range forecasting is impracticable.” HAT LIKE OLD TUT WORE, 1923 STYLE Americans will wear this summer if they see fit, the kind of a straw hat King Tut would have worn if he had worn a straw hat. “There is more energy in a pound jf bread than in a pound of meat.” Dr. Harvey W. Wiley is given as the authority for this statement, showing bread is the b.oj- wholesome and economical of all foods. Some scientists qualify tiiL b> saying it depends on the bread. Do you use bakim; soda instead of yeast in making bread? This ‘s a dangerous thing to do, it is said, because unless the soda is neutralized b’ an acid, such as sour milk, it apparently destroys the vitam'i of the grain, thus increasing vitamin deficiency. Do you put a pinch of baking soda in peas or beans ..hen you are cooking then; It makes them nice
and tender and preserves their fresh green color. But this presents a danger, for the soda has the cam 9 destructive effect upon the vitamin l:i the peas and beans that it does upon the grain in the bread. Dr. Alfred C. Reed, of Stanford University Medical School, is the authority quoted in these attacks against the use of soda. All of which is additional cause for the growing popularity of the little tin-foil-wrapped c-'-Uion. yeast. It is because common yeast is known to be the food richest in vitamin, which modern milling and cooking methods are said to remove, that people are eatir , yeast to complete what in many cases would be an otheewise deficient diet.
