PREACHER FRAMES FtURRIAGE DON’TS

Warns Girls Not to Waste Selves cn “Sports” and “Winged Feet”

Boston, April 12—“Who, When and How to Marry” was the title of a sermon delivered to his congregation recently by Rev. Arthur T. Brooks of Dudley Street Baptist church, Roxbnry. In the sermon Dr. Brooks expounded fiv<j don’ts for men and a like number for women. Those for the men were: “Don’t marry a pretty facesweetness and character are preferable. “Don’t Imarry for fun—marriage is a God-given, serious contract. “Don’t think you are marrying an angel—your girl is as human as you are. “Don’t marry mesrelyt a pair of winged feet—they do not usually harmonize with the kitchen floor! “Don’t' have long engagements— they’re wearing Ion the poetfly of life.” Following are his don’t for women: “Don’t marry a man to reform him “Don’t marry ‘a-dashing-good-time sort of chap and expect happiness. A steady-going, temperate man wears better in double harness. “Don’t marry a ‘meal ticket’ unless you have to. God meant you for better things. Keep your selfrespect. “Don’t marry except on a fiftyfifty basis—remember in the twenrieth century you are as important as your man. “Don’t marry for money—love is always the best.” v

LIVESTOCK FARMERS BEAT GRAIN GROWERS

Ohio Survey Shows Stockmen Making Better Than 2 Percent More on the Capital Invested

Recordls of Shelby County farmers, just compiled at the Ohio State University, check exactly in one important respect with records previously taken in Scioto and other Ohio counties. They show that livestock farming pays better than grain farming. Announcing this finding, R. F. Tabor of the rural economics department states that the farmers in question have all kept accurate accounts for the past four years. Their summary result follows: “The net income above expenses on grain farms averaged $1446. This had to go in part to cover interest on an average investment of $28,000. “For the 'livestiocK farms, which were not so large and had a smaller capitalization, the average nefc income above expenses was $1565. “If we allow these farmers average hired man’s wages for their Tabor, and do not consider the value of house rent, and of farm products consumed by the family amounting . tjn shout $.700- .si year, then the- grain farmers netted 3.3 percent on alpital invested^ The livestock men netted 5.5 percent. “The addition of livestock to the farm busirioss' enables the farmer to utilize waste pi'oducts and waste labor, and! materially to increase his net profits.”

MUST KNOW TRUCK SOIL TO ADVISE TREATMENT

Inquiries regarding fertilizers for different truck crops cannot always be answered promptly by Experiment Station horticulturists because the queries give no clue to the nature of the soil and 1 its previous treatment. To advise intelligently regarding the use of fertilizers is difficult at best, it is claimed, because of the valuations in soils, crop needs, and other factors. In order to make their service of more'value to gardeners, these specialists urge correspondents to give m detail the facts relating to the soil, its drainage, previous applications of manure and* commercial fertilizers, crops plowed under and kind and behavior of crops grown. LITTLE GIRLS BLOSSOMING LIKE FLOWERS IN HOME-MADE FROCKS

u£/? ciorus's.

CHICAGO—Mother-mad” garments for little girls ar” as old as the first fig-leaf .'rock worn ' v Lve’s oldest daughter. Tk n y are rmt hard to make-for several reasons. Curly-ka5r<?d youngsters with rose-oetal skins look pretty in anything thev wear, and it is easier u fashion small frocks than urge. The’little girl needs wash dresses, and to suprlv the need from toe family budget, it is sometimes advisable to cut the expense by sewing at travaganct of wartimes ” , “The unprecedented vogue of home-wrought clothes this spring,” said an official of Marshall Field je Company, wholesale, “shows the craditicnal industry of the American woman coming to the fore again after the abnormal and brief cxtt'i"'agan? and are blossoming like crocuses and tulips in the spring. ' jo clothe a child more beautifully than Solomon iri all his glory it is only necessary to take a short length of any of the bright or .chdnty-hueti percales, ginghams, linens, c: tissues, cut it in straight simple lines, trim it perhaps in bands of rlain - contrasting material, r evv it up and put it on. Flowers and children look alike anyway, ;nd the' simpler the litt' ; girl’s gown, the m®re effective it is. The neve voile la Cuisse, u sheer dotted fabric is especially fetching for little summer party frocks. It comes in all the light popular colors and needs very little trimming. Small sel'-ruf-fies give it a fluffy*, gala appearance that calls for nothing more. Plain colored fabrics may he embellished with mother’s handiwork until they look like Parisian importations.
