Snow in Far Western States Beneficial to Winter Wheat, Says U. S. Report

Washington, Feb. 2—The crop outlook is generally encouraging according to a summary issued by the Department of Agniculture, covering the Grst half of January. Winter wheat and rye are in good condition in far. Western states, snow in the Northern and Northwestern states having been beneficial. Eastern and Central states report only small damage from frost. Most of the corn crop remains in the field in the different sections, to be picked later in the season. Most of the crop has been well “cribbe4’\ and owing to the large crop much is used to substitute for small grains and the fodder and silage as a substitute for hay where these crops were short. Increased cotton yield is reported, and picking and ginning completed The fruit outlook also is good. Deciduous orchards in California have been benefited by cold weather following the December rains, preventing) premature budding. Florida has been similarly benefited. Recent ice storms, however, have lowered the productive capacity of New England apple orchards

nitely the plan for listing by name to the Pacific islands which are nof" to be further fortified, but the reply is in such form that some further discussion will be necessary. In the Shantung) negotiations there appeared no outward change in the situation, although there was evidence that increasing pressure was being brought to bear for a settlement. The predictions heard almost everywhere in conference circles was that a day or two more would tell the story, with tlm odds favoring acceptance of the settlement plan supported by Presi-
