Beware Anarchy Warns Governor
Louisiana Executive Points Oat Danger to Nation in tha Rise of BY JOHN M. PARKER, Governor of Louisiana.
Editor's Note—From far south Louisiana comes a voice of waVning. Governor John M. Parker is an old-fashioned American with oldfashioned and high ideals. The world turmoil with its viciious byproducts has led him to consider deep, ly what he declares to be the g>reatest problem of them all. His conclusions are given herewith.
from the world. The example of firmness and courage we give will encourage the other nations, who having' suffered more than we, have
y 1
a smaller power of resistance. The struggle will not be only for our own sakes (though it is worth making ven for that) but for the sake of!
civilised man everywhere. The fire has broken out. Let us hurry and extinguish the flames before they consume us.
The greatest problem Ameticr faces today in its struggle to return to normalcy is the problem of those who would perpetuate license. They are a vicious and ever pi’esent reality and all that America gave hei best blood for would be lost if once the evil claws of communism secure s hold upon the nation. Anarchy waits long, eagerly, unrelentingjly fot* its opportunity. The lulling to a fancied security of the great body of citizenship is as much to its interests as the havoc it woulc wreck once it had gained control. No nation is too great to resist the slow eating of a canker in its heatt if that canker is allowed to go on unchecked The enemies of established things of order and right living and decency are never idle. The followers of the upfight things rest too well in the shadow of the past, too firm in the belief that right will prevail without assistance from its believers. A Great Unrest Orderly government, security oi life, sacredness of property-rights are no longer revered safeguards of the masses. Where there is not contempt for established institutions, there is unrest that perils peace. We are abandoning safe foundations. The pyramid of society seems to be turned upside down and standing on its apex. Ever since the close of the war, the drift of the human current has been away from normalcy. No satisfactory reason has yet been discovered for this world-wide tendency. The reason is hardly to be found in the teachings of the Marxian philosophers, or the natural desire of man for liberty of thought and and unrestricted freedom of action. Generally speaking, man has been used to the restrictions of government too long for him to wish to permanently discard them now. And anarchy carries a strong appeal only to those races whjich have been en slaved. Bnt, whatever the causes, the fact of the unrest exists. As a great statesman once said, it is a condition and not a theory that confronts us. We ar^ faced with a great evil and we must find a positive cure. We must stop this drift away from ~s$TeT _ ro'oprihgp~y ,,-^h ‘ is T>a„sed on false ideas of the meaning of liberty and is stimulated by tricky leadership. The Solution. Solution of this problem lies in the patience, courage and determination of that large element of the population of the world which has not departed from the teachings of its fathers. The part of civilization which is right must struggle to make the balance of the world right. It must be prepared to battle for the peace and security that go with orderly government, rather than show a willingness to accept the dangerous peace and elushe happiness offered by the forces of disorder. It must not purchase personal ease and comfort at the expense of the public welfare. It must not sit down and supinely let the current of com munism engulf the world. The hope of mankind rests absolutely in the couragte and strength of purpose of those who have steadfastly refused to follow false political gods. In America there have been frequent warnings to disturb our rest. We have had a false sense of securi-% ty. Because the soecter of communism has not stalked before us, a grim and bloody spectacle, as it bar' in Russia, we have been slow to recognize it. Prosperous, well-fed, contented, self-satisfied, we have paid little heed to the rumblings of the threatened volcano. We Americans have a vanity really beyond our resources. We think our government is ideal (Which is indisputable' and that there are no moderin Doi Quixotes with the hardihood to as sail it. Therefore we have departed from the advice of Washington, it i» our idea, unexpressed, that if r cataclysm comes we will destroy it And we haven’t the remotest fear that any cataclysm will dare to attempt it. To paraphrase what has been widely saM of a well-known medicine, the cataclysm works whil America sleeps. Time to Awake. But the time is approaching, am is very close at hand, when we mus awake from our Rip Van Winkle sleep and meet this problem square ly. We must, stop the drift or i ,will continue to expand, take us al flood tide and engulf us. We mus call on men to stand up and be count ed. We must know the friends o: order from its foesv. We must up root thbse who are seeking to under mine the institutions our forefather, built with their blood, and whic’ they deemed imperishable. We mm crush the tyrannous foe of “life, lil erty and the pursuit of happiness’ called Rolshivism sternly, ruthless! for all time. So far as America citizenship is concerned, we mus put this country back where it wa before the war, restore the brother hood of Man, and make not only th life but the possessions of others secure. We must live our governmei as well as have it. We must be vigi lant in the defense of those politica institutions with which God has hies: ed us above any land in the world No Time for. Kindness. Because I love my country I hsvi no patience with those who would cure with kindness this evil which is striking at the foundations of Amer ican liberty. We cannot be pacifists when our homes are concerned If America crushes this rising menace, ft will soon disappear
