Douglas Stamping the Free States. Nothing marks the degeneracy of the Democratic party more clearly than the means resorted to by Douglas for advancing his prospects, lie is the fint Presidential candidate who
has mounted the stump to advocate his of one of the mostimthusiastic speakri: own election. Hitherto such candU "Gentlemen," said he, "thare is but dates have maintained a decent silence one man running tor President, and he from the moment of writing their let is John Dell. ( Cheers.) Ho stands

We do not know that he is not delighted with all this, but we do know that it would wear out any man, and that if it be continued, Mr. Lincoln, if he were as strong as Samson, and meek &a Moses, will be fagged and jaded, long before his official labors commence. We may thus perceive the differ ence between him and Douglas. The one stays at home, shunning, as far as he is able, the glare of notoriety, while the other openly courts it, strolling from place to place, to snuff the breath of popular applause, and touch the springs and pull the wire of the political machine. He disenchants everything he touches, and there can be little doubt that if by any accident, he should be elected President, the office would sink still lowerin the scale of degradation. Mo. Dem, ocrat. Henry Clay. The attempt on the part of certain democratic papers to create sympathy for their party, by claiming that Mr. Clay was an adherent to the present policy of that party, is foolish in the extreme. It is a mere assertion without any foundation whatever. Upon the doma that the Constitution carries Slavery into the Territories, Hen ry Clay said in 1850. You cannot put your finger on any part of the Constitution wnich con- . m -mm veya the right or the power to carry Slaves from one of the Slates in the Union to any Territory of the United States. Nor sir. can I admit for a single moment that there is any separate or distinct right upon the part ef the States or individual members ol the S ates, or any portion of the people of the United States, to carry slaves into the Territories are held between the sevearl estates. The Southern Democracy will repudate them, and the Douglas faction will have to prolong the fight, with all the odds against them, or go over into the He publican camp. Mr. Coawiir oh Republicanism. I The New Yorki Tribune says the following letter from Mr. Coawin, was by some accident not read at the mass meeting in Union square, on last Monday evening : "Nw York Citt, July 13. CO. "Dc ar Sir: I received your note this moment. I am obliged to leave for Washington to-night, I am on bun-' ness that will detain me there for two or three days. It is, therefore, quite impossible for me to be at the proposed meeting on Monday night. I rejoice to hear that such men as Messrs. Shepherd, Knapp, Willis Hall, Nathan C. Kir, Charles Roome, and Noah Worrall, have seen so clearly and so soon the obvious path of duty and patriotism. There is not a single political principle in our Republican creed, to which every old Whig cannot subscribe ; our ticket is the only one that cai prevent the contingency of an election devolving on Con gress. Our candidates have given to the world as full evidence of their ability and integrity as those who are upported by any other party. Why, then, should any friend of our principles fear or fail to rote with us. "I hope to be able to address the pecple here, and in tome two or three places ia Pennsylvania and New Jersey, before the canvass closes. THOS. CORWIN.

It had to be repn seted at this meeting and I came in t do it. Here I am, like all the Dell men, alive and full of work and enthusiasm. (Go it.) I tell you that John Bell is the only man up worthy to occupy the Presidential chair, lie is a statesman, by G d, yes, a statesman, not a demaoiue like Stephen A. Chances la tao nouie Lincoln or Lane will be President. although the possibility of the elec tlouse of iveprusentatives is very re mote, yet it excites some speculations as to the result, the corruptibility of the House entering largely, of course into every calculation. And probably no iucii nave vuuuwru ujv . ... .... no men have counted more confident yon this than the leading supporters J.r n i i i rr u of Mr. Douglas and with some show - - . :,t. f.r,.i I Vm at M U) sWf v w a a w w would donbtlets beat the world in off ering bribes. But the field is hardly an even battle ground. Of the thirty three votes which the entire House will cast, Mr. Douglas has only oue that of his own btate. Mr. Hell is in the same predicament. Mr. Lincoln has fifteen, and three States Ken tuckey, Maryland and North Carolina are evenlr divided. So Mr. Doug0 las' 8 friends would have rather strong odds against them. With Delaware, they think they might drive a trade. Breckinridge, on the other hand, has only to buy up one man in each of these pivotal States, and three u-lraer cans in Tennessee, and his fortune is made. The logic of this should be plain to Douglas men. If they really wish to preserve their organization as a party to trample down those who have left their camp to follow the ban ner of secession if they wish to make their power felt let them vote for Lincoln, and remove even the remote possibility of the election of Breckinridge by the House, or Lane by the "senate, to the Presidency, of the United States. Boston Journal. Still tuet Comk. Frank H. Firman, Esq., hitherto one of the leading Democrats of Madison, Wis:, has just published a letter in the Argut & Democrut of that city, resigning his position as Chairman of the Dane County Democratic Committee, and announcing his intention to vote for Lincoln. He gives his reasons: I cannot vote for Mr. Breckinridge, because he stands upon the pro-slavery 1 . p'atiorm I do not deem it advisable to vote for Mr. Douglas, for the following reasons: 1st. He cannot be elected, 2d: Voting for him only increases the chances of the election of a proslavery candidate. 3d The resolution adopted at Baltimore, wnich is endorsed by Douglas, in his letter accepting the nomination, substantially coucades, to (ar as principle is concerned, ali that the secessionists demanded, - It virtualll declares that the Democratic party will not only abid by the "D red Scott Decisäion, ' but will aU favor Congres sional legislation to enforce and carry it into effeclwhich raean3"int3rven tion," if it means anything. 4th.
