Speedway Results NEW PARIS — Saturday, June 25 will be the Joe Hamsher Memorial at the New Parish Speedway for the outlaw super late models, late models,, and street stocks. Over 100 cars are expected. And as an added bonus a Hot Rod show is also slated for cars manufactured 1951 and before. A full show of top hot rods, street rods, and customs will be on hand. Joe Hamsher built the New Paris Speedway in 1948 after going to the'lndianapolis 500. Hamsher shaped a track in an alfalfa field of his farm. He passed away from heart failure in ’%6. The outlaw super ‘e model class is large with Brian Ross. Glen Laughlin, and Jeff and Greg Parr joining the star studded field in recent weeks. Clete Caywood leads the points race, with Fred Reed in second. The late models points race is led by "Doug Hanna in his 1988 Thunderbird. Errol Thompson is challenging. The wild street stocks are led by John Oliver. Gates open at 2 with time trials at 6, and racing at 8 p.m.

Jimmy Houston honored as the 1987 King of Sports

Jimmy Houston, the 1987 King of Sports, had those present in the North Webster gymnasium, Saturday, June 18. hooked on his advice and humor as part of the International Palace of Sports' tribute to the professional fisherman. Houston was crowned King of Sports late Saturday morning. A banquet at thf>P+ppecanoe Country Club followed tne coronation and Houston\wrapped.up his activities with a rishing demonstration at the school / Nine individuals received Tshirts at the fishing/demonstration with another North Webster resident earning a fishing expedition with the pro. At the banquet, Houston was accompanyied by his wife, Chris. Special speakers included Indiana Congressman John Hiler and Grace Schools President, Dr. John J. Davis. In Houston's honor, Emily Thomas wrote and sang — with the Millstream Band —a ballad for the King of Sports. Dutch Mullet, also from North Webster, painted a portrait of Houston, which will appear in the Palace of Sports. In Houston's professional fishing career, he has won 10 nar tional tournaments. The Oklahoma native gave advice during the demonstration on casting, proper holding of the fishing rod and tips that can be learned at home to improve the sport.

In casting, Houston stressed the underhand cast method over the overhand. He felt several seconds could be saved with the underhand method, allowing each fisherman more time to cast and potentially catch more fish.

Nationally known as a bass fisherman, the 43-year-old Houston discussed the secrets of effective bass fishing. He remarked that bass like to be where junctions exist — between two logs or limbs.
